West Allis Police Department was represented by Sergeant Todd Clementi in this past weekend’s police skills challenge. As part of the Harley Davidson Anniversary, 110 motor officers from throughout the United States and Canada gathered to train and improve their motorcycle skills. Including Sergeant Clementi, there were 11 motor officers representing Wisconsin.
The skills challenge course was comprised of eight obstacles revealed to the competing officers just hours before they took their motor unit to the course. Officers were only allowed to walk through the course before the competition began. Each officer was allowed two runs through the course – one on Friday and one on Saturday. Each run was timed and penalties were issued based on skill quality of the run. The top ten then competed in the final round on Saturday evening where an officer from Volusia County Florida won first place. This officer was awarded a new police motorcycle for his department by Harley Davidson. All competing officers also had the honor to ride in Saturday’s parade.
As stated by a representative from Harley Davidson, the ability to quickly and safely maneuver a motorcycle is a perishable skill which is exactly why Harley Davidson offers these training opportunities. The skills that motor officers learn in this training and competition transfer directly to the very obstacles they face every day as a motor officer. The concept is simple, the more training, the safer the officer.
Motor officers serve the citizens of West Allis in many capacities, from service calls and traffic to parades and special events. Sergeant Clementi has served on the motor unit for the past four years and this was his first skills competition.
