West Allis Hale girls volleyball capture Blandino title
Huskies go 10-1 in tournament matches
A top-notch effort netted the West Allis Hale girls volleyball team the championship in its own Mary Blandino Tournament on Saturday.
The Huskies posted a 10-1 record for the day, sweeping St. Francis, Germantown, Racine Park and Heritage Christian and winning two of three against Martin Luther.
"This was probably the best I've seen these players play since joining Hale girls volleyball last season," head coach Leng Sayaovong said. "To win our own invite was huge for us."
The tournament title capped a fine week for Hale, which also topped rival West Allis Central 22-25, 25-8, 25-11, 25-22 in a Greater Metro Conference dual on Sept. 10.
The Huskies began the Blandino Invite with a 25-15, 25-21 victory over St. Francis, then tipped Martin Luther 23-25, 25-15, 15-10 in the second round.
They downed Germantown 25-23, 25-23, Racine Park 25-11, 25-21 and Heritage Christian 25-11, 25-10 to close out the tournament.
"The match against Germantown really showed that these players are starting to believe and trust in one another," Sayaovong said. "I hope that they will continue to build the trust and chemistry with one another throughout the season."
Jaime Supple led Hale in kills with 33 for the day, while Taylor Supple collected 10 service aces, Cassidy Luttinen 72 assists, Rebecca Kuske 14 blocks and Natalie Carr 32 digs.
In the dual against Central, Jaime Supple totaled 11 kills, Taylor Supple five aces, Luttinen 14 assists, Kuske eight blocks and Katie Martin 14 digs.
"The first game, we started a little shaky, making too many mental errors like being out of position and missing too many serves at crucial moments," Sayaovong said. "We are still trying to figure out what our strengths are. The match showed the players that we can win no matter who's on the court."
The Huskies play in the Middleton Invitational on Sept. 21 and then visit Brookfield Central on Sept. 24 in another GMC meet.
