West Allis Central, Whitnall win four duals at Zelinski meet
Teams combine for 10 unbeatens
Once again, the Zelinski Duals proved to be a success both on and off the mats for the Whitnall wrestling team.
The Falcons won four of five duals to take ninth place in the 27th annual Zelinski meet, put on another crowd-pleasing show and most importantly, they raised more money for the Joel Zelinski Scholarship Fund.
"It went smoothly, it looked like a nice crowd and the wrestling was fantastic," said co-head coach John Quinlan, who estimated that Saturday's event would help the tournament pass the $100,000 mark in total funds raised.
Teams, volunteers help
Quinlan also praised both the visiting teams and the group of wrestling alumni, parents and fans who volunteer their time to help out at the meet.
"We're fortunate to have three of the top-ranked teams in the state," he said. "Merrill, Stoughton and Pulaski could go anywhere, but they keep coming back here. They really help make the tournament what it is.
"We're so impressed year after year with the people who keep coming back to help out. Our managers also did a terrific job in keeping things going."
West Allis Central also took part in the meet this year, winning four of five duals to place fifth.
Whitnall opened with a 43-19 loss to Woodland Conference rival Pewaukee, which had also topped the Falcons 48-14 in a conference dual earlier this season.
"I thought we wrestled better against Pewaukee than we did in December," Quinlan said.
The Falcons then downed Green Bay Preble 48-24, Germantown 49-29, Beaver Dam 41-30 and Hartford 40-31 to climb back to ninth place.
"We bounced back right away," the coach said. "I thought we wrestled well against Preble, we did OK against Hartford, we weren't quite as good against Beaver Dam and we did well against Germantown."
Senthavisouk hits 30
Anthony Senthavisauk posted a 5-0 record with four pins and a forfeit, and notched his 30th victory of the season.
Also going 5-0 were Blake Leslie (four major decisions), Nick Monty (two pins and a technical fall) and Ryan Olson (four pins).
Dylan Kellner went 4-0, avenging an earlier loss to Pewaukee, and Seth Nowak posted a 2-0 mark for the tournament.
Joe Price finished 4-1, while Ethan Harycki and Michael Langenohl both went 3-2.
"Those are the guys we've been counting on all year long," Quinlan said. "Those guys did a nice job, but it was a team effort again. The other guys were bumped around in weight classes. Jon Homontowski, Ryan Keierleber, Peter Moore and Cysco Rodriguez each helped us get the matchups we wanted so we could move out ahead in team points."
Central goes 4-1
West Allis Central downed Green Bay Preble 60-7, Mukwonago 40-25, Waukesha South 36-28 and Kenosha Bradford 53-18 while losing to Pewaukee 39-16.
Going 5-0 were Tyus White, Tere White, Mark Choinski and Jason Alvarez.
Robert Torres finished with a 4-1 record and Vicente Cardoso, Mauricio Cardoso and Chris Helm all came in at 3-2 on the day.
Merrill was the overall winner, based on tiebreaker criteria. The tournament featured no unbeaten squads.
Whitnall fell to South Milwaukee 36-21 in a Woodland Conference dual on Jan. 22, its second conference defeat of the season.
