Greenfield girls volleyball
The Hustlin' Hawks started the season with a big victory, downing state-ranked Brookfield Central, 26-28, 25-19, 25-22, 25-17, on Aug. 30.
"This was a big win for our program," head coach Britany Pfeifer said. "This team plays with a lot of desire, and that is something that as a coach, I am so excited to work with. I feel that is something you can't teach - you have to want it."
Jessie Kalous led Greenfield in kills with 16 and added three solo and two assisted blocks.
"Jessie is a huge part of our offense and as a two-year starter, she is really stepping up when needed," Pfeifer said.
Erika Deubig collected nine kills, while Lauren Bullock totaled 30 digs and Luci Krenzke 10 digs and 40 assists.
"Our team is young, with only one senior - right-side hitter Sarah Habermahl," Pfeifer said. "We have a solid junior class, one sophomore, Sam DeLeon, who started last year; and two freshmen."
The Hawks placed seventh in a talented field at the Muskego Invitational on Saturday.
Greenfield boys soccer
After not scoring a goal in early games this season, the Hustlin' Hawks came up with two victories last week.
They blanked Wisconsin Lutheran, 2-0, on Aug. 30 behind goals from Dusan Ogjannovic and Matt Defatte, assists from David Castillo and Stephen Lisiecki and five saves by goalkeeper Brett Szalaczinski.
They also downed Cudahy/St. Francis, 4-1, on Aug. 27 as Castillo scored twice and Kyle Holmes and Miki Kosanovic each once. Holmes, Defatte, Tyler Lenzke and Alex Cramer each contributed assists.
Greenfield lost to Whitnall, 2-1, on Aug. 29 and fell to Delavan-Darien, 2-0, on Saturday.
Whitnall boys soccer
The Falcons remained atop the Woodland Conference going into this week with victories of 2-1 over Greenfield on Aug. 29 and 3-0 over Greendale on Aug. 27.
Whitnall trailed the Hustlin' Hawks 1-0 at the half, but Petar Miskov and Joey Schauer assisted on a header from Jamie Wunrow as the Falcons tied it at 1-1.
Later, Schauer took on the defense and was taken down in the box for a penalty kick, and Miskov converted it for the game-winner.
Against Greendale, Cade Dombrowski tallied twice and Bryan Domitrz once for the Falcons, who came into this week at 2-0 in the Woodland.
Whitnall girls volleyball
The Falcons downed Lake Geneva Badger, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20, on Aug. 28.
Emily Kuether paced Whitnall in kills with 11, while Lauren Ray collected nine aces, Candace Pollock 10 digs and Kim Ertl 18 assists.
"We need our hitters to start stepping up and become more aggressive, and Emily did a good job of that," head coach Todd Smith said. "Lauren got us out of a few tight spots with her serving."
The Falcons also played at Kettle Moraine on Saturday and in one of their matches, lost two games to New Berlin West.
Hale boys soccer
Alex Kaul, Joey Daniels, Alex Sykes and Kevin Rodriguez all scored as the Huskies downed the New Berlin Eisenhower varsity reserve, 4-1, in the Eisenhower Tournament on Friday.
Sykes added two assists, while Daniels and David Livoti chipped in with one apiece for Hale.
On Saturday, the Huskies lost to Bradley Tech, 2-1, despite a goal from Antonio Rodriguez.
The Huskies (5-4-1 coming into this week) also lost to Marquette, 5-0, on Aug. 28 and to Milwaukee Lutheran, 2-1, on Aug. 27.
Hale girls volleyball
Brookfield Central pulled out a tight 27-25, 25-19, 25-21 match over the Huskies in the Greater Metro Conference opener on Aug. 28.
Miranda Bailey totaled eight kills, while Jamie Supple added six. Caitlin Kantowski collected 15 assists and 12 digs. Rachel Milani made four blocks and Marlee Freitag served two aces.
The Huskies went on to finish sixth in the powerful Muskego Invitational on Saturday. They beat Oak Creek, 2-0, but fell to Muskego, Brookfield East and Nicolet by the same margin.
Kantowski collected 35 assists on the day, while Natalie Carr posted 32 digs. Freitag and Bailey each served five aces in the victory over Oak Creek.
Whitnall girls tennis
Leah Symborski won at first singles, 6-2, 6-3, and the first doubles team of Krista Stribling and Ann Marie Bay also prevailed, 6-1, 7-5, as the Falcons blanked Greenfield, 7-0, on Aug. 28.
Whitnall lost a 5-2 dual to Shorewood on Aug. 30.
Greenfield boys cross country
The Hustlin' Hawks placed seventh with 193 points in the West Allis Central Invitational Friday at McCarty Park.
Casey Sabinash was the leader in 24th place with 17 minutes, 39 seconds. He was followed by Andy Sabinash in 30th (17:53), Tom Friedbacker 38th (18:11), Quinton Kufahl 43rd (18:23), Cody Hagfors 58th (18:48), Brandon Dachowski 72nd (19:24) and Dylan Kumbera 77th (19:32).
Greenfield girls cross country
Keely Hanley led the way for the Hustlin' Hawks with a seventh-place finish in 15 minutes, 33 seconds at the West Allis Central Invitational Friday at McCarty Park.
That was also a school record for the 4-K, head coach Ernie Rosenthal said.
Tia Ruhland placed 32nd (17:34), Megan Baillaregeon-Theune 33rd (17:35), Andrea Organ 64th (18:48) and Natalia Coralic 73rd (19:33).
The top three runners are all freshmen.
Central girls cross country
The Bulldogs tallied 263 points for 11th place of 14 teams in their own invitational Friday at McCarty Park.
Katie Wardinski was 24th with a personal-best 16 minutes, 44 seconds, beating her best time of last season by 32 seconds. Alex Jonas took 31st in 17:33, which was four minutes faster than the previous week.
Becky Schwindt took 55th place in 18:10, almost equaling her best time from last year by six seconds.
Hanna Pfister was 76th (21:54), Dana Batchelor 77th (22:08) and Kirsten Donnerbauer 78th (22:25) for the Bulldogs.
"Total team improvement showed this week," head coach Mark Klobukowski said.
Central boys cross country
Tyler Miletti captured fifth place in 16 minutes, 41 seconds for the Bulldogs at their own invitational Friday at McCarty Park.
Freddy Birchbauer placed 76th (19:30), Collin Borazo 83rd (20:02), Joshua Boeder 84th (20:15), Damien McFadden 89th (20:32), Jack Rindahl 91st (20:55) and Joshua Ostrenga 94th (21:16) for Central, which totaled 337 points for 13th place.
Central girls volleyball
In the Greater Metro Conference opener, the Bulldogs fell to Wauwatosa East, 25-15, 20-25, 25-27, 25-11, 15-11, on Aug. 28.
Mary Martens totaled 10 kills, Melissa Smith 10 assists and five aces and Emily Villafuentes 10 digs. Gabby Coto-Valentin paced Central in blocks.
The Bulldogs then finished ninth in the Muskego Invitational on Saturday. They lost two straight matches to Hartland Arrowhead and Nicolet, then fell in two sets to Oak Creek and Greenfield in the playoffs.
Rachel Sura led Central in kills and Amber Wegner in digs.
Central boys volleyball
The Bulldogs opened the season by going 1-2 in their own quadrangular on Aug. 29.
They downed Kenosha Indian Trail, 20-15, 20-17, 16-20, but lost to West Allis Hale, 22-20, 20-16, 21-19, and to Kenosha Bradford, 20-16, 20-14, 16-20.
Junior Josh Kopplin is the lone returning letterman, while seniors Mike Brown and Zach Holmes are expected to be key contributors.
Hale boys volleyball
The Huskies went 2-1 in the West Allis Central Quadrangular on Aug. 29.
They beat Kenosha Indian Trail, 20-10, 20-8, 20-6, and Central, 22-20, 20-16, 21-19.
Greenfield/Whitnall boys VB
The Raptors went 1-5 in their pool at the season-opening Kettle Moraine Invitational on Saturday.
This is the first season that Greenfield and Whitnall have sponsored a combination team.
Seniors are Kyle Hanneken, Calvin Beebe and Parambir Singh.
Greenfield girls tennis
The Hustlin' Hawks fell, 7-0, to Whitnall on Aug. 28 and 5-2 to Brown Deer on Aug. 30 in Woodland Conference duals.
Central boys soccer
The Bulldogs fell, 9-0, to Sussex Hamilton in a Greater Metro Conference game on Aug. 28 and 6-0 to Waukesha South on Aug. 30.
