Greenfield wrestling

Thrust into the lineup on short notice, Victor Castro made the most of his opportunity.

Castro went on to finish second at 138 pounds for the Hustlin' Hawks in a WIAA Division 1 regional at Greenfield on Saturday, becoming one of seven qualifiers for this weekend's sectional.

Castro won a 6-1 decision in his semifinal, but was then pinned in the first-place match. He wrestled back for second, though, and won by rule, meaning that he had defeated that wrestler earlier in the tournament.

"I give Victor a great deal of credit for jumping in the day before the regional meet," head coach Daniel Jackson said. "He ended up placing second, and what a great display of character."

Finishing second at 126 was Alec Adams (26-4).

Tyler Dorfner was third at 152 pounds and fourths were claimed by Steven Patrick (132), Marc Mayer (170), Justin Singleton (195) and Brandon Tolbert (220).

"Marc stepped up big and earned his way to the sectional with back-to-back pins," Jackson said. "I'm impressed with Marc's courage and desire to win."

They will all compete in a sectional at 10 a.m. Saturday at Racine Horlick. The top two in each weight class advance to the state individual tournament Feb. 23 to 25 in Madison.

Greenfield tallied 99 points for fifth place in the regional meet.

Whitnall wrestling

Anthony Senthavisouk and Mason Howard both finished second to lead five Falcons out of a WIAA Division 1 regional on Saturday into this weekend's sectional.

Senthavisouk (35-10) was the runner-up at 106 pounds, while Howard (44-4) came in second at 145 pounds.

Whitnall's other sectional qualifiers all finished fourth: Evan Olson at 138, John McGee at 160 and Ty Fischer at 170. Olson improved to 30-20, McGee 36-11 and Fischer 21-17.

They will take part in a sectional at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Waukesha West. The top two in each weight class advance to the state individual meet Feb. 23 to 25 at Madison.

Coming in sixth were Blake Leslie (120), Dylan Kellner (126), Zach Price (152), Sam Howard (182), Alex Sterling (195) and Ethan Harycki (heavyweight).

Whitnall tallied 86.5 points for sixth place in the regional.

Whitnall combined gymnastics

Now is the time to shine for the defending Division 1 state champion Franklin/Muskego/Oak Creek/Whitnall gymnastics team.

After a second-place finish in the Nordy Invitational at Mukwonago last Saturday, they will take part in the Southeast/Classic 8 Conference Meet Thursday at Mukwonago.

"We're looking to win this meet and then set ourselves up well (for WIAA sectional and state meets)," said coach Katie Moore. "We have some challenges ahead of ourselves, but it's fun to have challenges.

"We know the bar has been set very high for us (by the powerful Burlington co-op), but it'll still be fun to see if we can reach it."

FMOW scored 145.05 points in the nine-school Nordy Invite as that Burlington co-op turned in a spectacular score of 147.175 in winning the meet. A few weeks ago, Burlington set an unofficial state record with a 148-plus score in a dual meet.

Moore said several good things happened at the invite.

"It wasn't our best meet but it did give us something to work on and look forward to," she said.

Melanie Pearson had the best overall day for FMOW, taking second on floor exercise with a personal best of 9.425 while also earning fifth on balance beam with a 9.15. Shannon Hein was also third on floor with a 9.35.

Hale boys basketball

Derrick Waller tallied 21 points to lead the Huskies to a 72-50 victory over Cudahy on Feb. 7.

Nick Sotiros added 14 points and Travis Balcerzak 13 for Hale, which beat Cudahy for the second straight season and ended a nine-game losing streak.

On Friday night, the Huskies battled Wauwatosa East but eventually fell, 61-52. Balcerzak totaled 16 points, Waller 12 and Dan Sotiros eight.

Hale, which moved to 0-12 in the Greater Metro Conference and 4-15 overall, hosts Sussex Hamilton (5-7, 10-10) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, then visits red-hot Menomonee Falls (7-5, 10-8) at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23 to close the regular season.

Greenfield boys basketball

The Hustlin' Hawks notched a 78-68 victory over Wauwatosa West on Feb. 7 - their fourth victory in five games - but then dropped a tough 49-47 decision to Greendale on Friday.

Sonnie Wilbert racked up 26 points, Nick Jablonski 20 and Ricky Santiago 15 for the Hawks against Tosa West. Greenfield outscored the Trojans, 26-13, in the second quarter for a 40-22 halftime lead.

Against Greendale, though, the offense was not as prolific. Jablonski finished with 10 points and Santiago and Josh Czerwinski seven apiece.

Greenfield (3-12 in the Woodland Conference, 4-15 overall going into this week) travels to South Milwaukee (8-7, 11-8) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, then welcomes Whitnall (13-2, 17-2) at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22.

Whitnall girls basketball

The Falcons opened last week with a 48-33 victory over St. Thomas More on Feb. 6 but then dropped a tough 50-48 decision to Wauwatosa West on Friday night.

Against More, Ann Marie Bay and Ashley Markowiak each tallied 12 points and Rachael Shulta, Elena Busalacchi and Lizzy Menden six apiece.

Markowiak totaled 15 points and Bay 12 on Friday, but it was not enough against Tosa West.

Whitnall, which went to 7-7 in the Woodland Conference and 10-8 overall, visits unbeaten New Berlin Eisenhower (14-0, 17-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and travels to Waterford (9-8) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Central girls basketball

The Bulldogs could not stay with Greater Metro Conference co-leader Divine Savior Holy Angels in a 66-42 loss on Friday.

Mehryn Kraker poured in 23 points with a trio of 3-point field goals, while Sierra Brown added eight points for Central, which was outscored 19-6 in the third quarter to fall behind 51-32.

The Bulldogs (5-6 in the GMC and 6-12 overall) travel to Menomonee Falls (8-3, 15-4) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, then welcome Oak Creek (14-5) at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22. They lost to the Knights, 38-34, earlier this season.

Hale girls basketball

The Huskies nearly beat Wauwatosa East on Friday but fell, 41-39, in a Greater Metro Conference game.

Erin Barbeau tallied 12 points, while Jennifer Jender totaled 11 with a trio of 3-point field goals and Jennifer Stawicki seven.

The Huskies dropped to 2-9 in the GMC and 3-14 overall. They visit Sussex Hamilton (9-2, 13-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and welcome Greenfield (3-15) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Greenfield girls basketball

The Hustlin' Hawks lost to rival Greendale, 53-30, on Friday night.

Jill Dworschack scored eight points to lead Greenfield, which slid to 1-13 in the Woodland Conference and 3-15 overall. The Hawks host South Milwaukee (9-5, 10-6) at 7:30 p.m. Friday and visit West Allis Hale (3-14) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

West Allis gymnastics

The local combo team tallied 101.175 points for eighth place in the Mukwonago Invitational on Saturday.

West Allis also dropped a dual to Whitefish Bay, 139.425-132.45, on Feb. 9. Kori Huddleston won the floor exercise with 9.2 points.
