Hale girls basketball
A big fourth quarter lifted the Huskies to a 45-35 victory over St. Thomas More on Nov. 28.
The Cavaliers led by six points early in the fourth when Hale went to a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap to spark a rally. The Huskies hit seven of 12 shots from the floor and six of six at the free throw line as they outscored More 21-10.
Sarah Mueller collected 14 points, 15 rebounds, two blocks and one assist, while Rachel Milani added 13 points and Rachel Seefeldt 10 points, five assists and seven rebounds. Seefeldt went 4-for-4 at the line in the final minute.
Katie Swofford contributed four assists, two rebounds and a steal; Cortney Wery five rebounds, one steal and one block; and Kristen Folger six rebounds, one block and one steal.
Hale lost to Slinger, 40-26, on Friday, shooting just 20 percent from the field. Mueller led the Huskies with six points.
The Huskies (1-2 going into this week) visit Divine Savior Holy Angels at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 in the Greater Metro Conference opener. They then travel to West Allis Central at 6 p.m. Dec. 11.
The Huskies pummeled Whitewater, 65-9, in a non-conference dual on Nov. 27, then won three of five duals at the Kettle Moraine Invitational on Saturday.
Hale downed Oak Creek, 58-4; St. John's Northwestern Military Academy, 69-6; and Kenosha Tremper, 48-30; and lost to Mukwonago, 36-34, and Wisconsin Rapids, 31-24.
Going 5-0 were Dallas Wanta at 220 pounds, Ryan Vankerkvoorde at heavyweight and Trevor Kruzick at 120 and 126 pounds. Finishing 4-1 were Oliver Arena (106), John Baltz (113) and Maurice Beck (145).
Posting three victories were Jordan Plantiko (195), Jeffery Schubert (132), Josh Petrovich (138), Jake Gruichich (152) and Taylor Tomczak (160).
In the dual with Whitewater, winners were Lucas Semrau at 113 (pin in 2 minutes, 57 seconds), Kruzick at 120 (19-2), Luke Ellis at 126 (pin in 2:22), Schubert at 132 (pin in 2:46), Petrovich at 138 (5-3), Gruichich at 152 (14-11), Tomczak at 170 (pin in 35 seconds), Plantiko at 195 (pin in 3:13), Wanta at 220 (pin in 1:55), Vankerkvoorde at heavyweight (forfeit) and Arena at 106 (pin in 5:51).
Tomczak, Wanta, Baltz, Kruzick, Ellis, Schubert, Petrovich, Mocco and Vankerkvoorde all qualified for WIAA sectional action last season.
A rebuilding job awaits the Falcons this season after they lost eight seniors from last year's squad.
"It will definitely be a youth movement this year, as we will start nine sophomores and a freshman in most matches," head coach John Quinlan said.
Whitnall only has two seniors in captains Zach Barnhart at 170 pounds and Zach Price at 160 pounds, and the only returning WIAA sectional qualifier is sophomore Anthony Senthavisauk (106).
The Falcons went 2-3 at the Tom Manley Duals in East Troy on Saturday, upsetting the host school, 35-33, and topping Union Grove. They lost to rated foes West Allis Central and Harvard (Ill.), along with Green Bay Southwest, 39-38. Barnhart and Senthavisauk both went 4-1.
Whitnall dropped its Woodland Conference opener to Pewaukee, 42-19, on Nov. 28. Senthavisauk (106) and sophomore Blake Leslie (126) both posted pins.
The young Hustlin' Hawks claimed fifth place at Saturday's Campbellsport Invitational with 115 points.
Tom Friedbacher (152 pounds) and Logan Zabkowicz (113) both captured third place, while Tyler Dorfner (160), Turner Panich (170) and Adam Zieman (120) all finished fourth.
Taking fifth were Eric Ostovich (126), Victor Castro (138), Matt Braatz (195) and Alex Morton (heavyweight).
Greenfield dropped a Woodland Conference dual meet to Greendale, 43-21, on Nov. 28. Winners were Morton (6-2 decision), Castro (pin), Friedbacher (8-3), Dorfner (pin) and Chad Karges (10-4).
Returning WIAA sectional qualifiers are Castro, Dorfner and Brandon Tolbert (220).
Whitnall boys swimming
The Falcons downed the combined Wauwatosa squad in their opening dual meet of the 2012-13 season.
Winners were Jack Larson in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, David Monteilh in the 50 freestyle, Ben Hinson in the 100 freestyle and Jake Hodel in the 100 breast stroke.
The 200 medley relay team of Hinson, Hodel, Larson and Monteilh also won.
Whitnall boys basketball
Austin Hurst tallied a game-high 18 points and Danny Weymier added 13 points, but the Falcons dropped a tough 56-54 decision to rival Greenfield on Friday.
Whitnall trailed 34-25 at the half but outscored the Hustlin' Hawks 21-14 in the third quarter to come within 48-46. The Falcons also led 54-52 late in the game but Greenfield's Ricky Santiago connected on a layup and hit two free throws to pull out the game.
Nathan Schaefer and Sam Mentkowski each added seven points for Whitnall, which fell to 1-2 in the Woodland Conference East Division and 2-3 overall.
Whitnall also lost, 73-62, to Brown Deer on Nov. 27 despite 27 points from Mitch Brault and 10 by Mentkowski. Brault hit five 3-point field goals.
The Falcons visit Shorewood at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7.
Greenfield girls basketball
After scoring 24 second-quarter points against Whitnall on Friday night, the Hustlin' Hawks were within 35-33 at the half.
They managed just four points in the second half, though, and dropped a 56-37 decision.
Madison Kohl led them with nine points, while Sara Kassel tallied seven and Dana Schwab six.
Greenfield also fell to Greendale, 43-30, on Nov. 27 as Tuyet Nguyen scored 12 points and Schwab seven.
The Hawks slipped to 0-2 in the Woodland Conference East Division and 1-2 overall. They visit Pius XI at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 and host Wauwatosa West at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11.
Central girls basketball
Tyanna Turkvan tallied a team-high 13 points, but the Bulldogs fell to West Bend West, 61-36, on Friday night.
"Tyanna hustled on defense and was aggressive on offense," head coach Dena Smith said. "Rachel Sura (who totaled seven points) had some nice putbacks."
The Bulldogs also lost to Wilmot, 56-13, on Nov. 27. Bria Brown scored six points.
Central hosts Sussex Hamilton at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 in the Greater Metro Conference opener and welcomes West Allis Hale at 6 p.m. Dec. 11.
