Sports Wrapups: Dec. 8

Dec. 6, 2011 | 0 comments

GF/GD boys swimming

The outlook remains strong for the Panther-Hawks this season, despite the graduation losses of WIAA Division 1 state swimmers Matt Jungers and Jack Lennertz.

Greenfield/Greendale routed Watertown, 109-60, on Nov. 23 and Wauwatosa West, 112-72, on Nov. 30.

"We have a relatively small team," coach Dale Schrank said, "but they are working very hard and some of the newer swimmers are developing at a much faster rate than I would have expected."

Returning lettermen include Zach Hogan, Shaun and Adam Fleischhacker, Shaun Lucchesi, Andrew Staszak, Ross Rybakowicz, Jeff Jacobs and Joe Hannah, along with divers Will Kivlin and Liam Duffy.

Freshmen making an early impact are Rick Perez, butterflier Andrew Semancik, freestyler Jaron Litza and breaststroker Sam Keltner.

Winners against Tosa West were Adam Fleischhacker in the 200 freestyle (2 minutes, 1.58 seconds), Shaun Fleischhacker in the 200 individual medley (2:16.8), Lucchesi in the 50 freestyle (23.93 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (52.17), Kivlin in diving (182.5 points), Rybakowicz in the 100 butterfly (55.41) and 500 freestyle (5:04.28), Staszak in the 100 backstroke (1:01.31), the 200 medley team of Perez, Rybakowicz, Staszak and Shaun Fleischhacker (1:46.12), the 200 freestyle squad of Lucchesi, Jacobs, Adam Fleischhacker and Hogan (1:37.25) and the 400 freestyle group of Rybakowicz, Staszak, Hogan and Perez (3:34.5).

Central wrestling

The Bulldogs posted a 5-0 mark in dual meets at the East Troy Invitational on Saturday.

Finishing unbeaten on the day were Tere White at 106 pounds, Skyler Pedersen at 113, Nate Keaton at 132, Brian Smith at 152 and Eric Vis at 160. Pedersen, Keaton, Smith and Vis competed for Central at last season's WIAA Division 1 state meet.

Hale boys basketball

The Huskies had to wait until the latter part of last season to notch their first victory, but this year, they did it in their first game, topping St. Francis, 62-43, on Nov. 29.

"We could really hit the ground running with our offense, and our defense played well too," coach Kenny Bosch said. "We had 14 steals, with nine leading to layups."

Hale fell behind 9-2, but tallied 13 straight points to take a 15-9 lead. Travis Balcerzak led the way with 18 points, while Steve Kopet and Derrick Waller each scored 13.

The Huskies, however, lost their Greater Metro Conference opener to Brookfield Central, 62-40, on Friday despite 14 points from Waller, eight by Balcerzak and six apiece from Luke Langer and Kopet.

Hale visits Marquette on Friday, then welcomes West Allis Central for the second game of a girls-boys doubleheader on Tuesday at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Whitnall girls basketball

Ashley Markowiak tallied 18 points to lead the Falcons to a 49-39 triumph over Delavan-Darien on Friday.

Ann Marie Bay added 11 points and Elena Busalacchi eight for Whitnall, which trailed by one point after three quarters but outscored Delavan-Darien 20-9 in the fourth. Markowiak had two 3-point plays and the Falcons hit 9 of 12 free throws in the final period.

Coach Keith Larson praised point guards Lizzy Menden and Lydia Pinscak for their play.

Hale wrestling

The Huskies won four of six dual meets last week, beating Milwaukee Riverside/Shorewood, 60-18, on Dec. 1 and taking three of five at the Laser Duals in Wales on Saturday.

Winners against Riverside were Andy Moyle at 138 pounds (pin in 1 minute, 48 seconds), Micho Gruichich at 145 (26-10), Logan Mocco at 152 (pin in 4:28), Taylor Tomczak at 160 (pin in 1:10), Jack Allen at 170 (13-3), Dallas Wanta at 220 (5-0), Justin Slinker at 106 (forfeit), Trevor Kruzick at 113 (pin in 5:05), Luke Ellis at 120 (pin in 2:50), Jeffery Schubert at 126 (pin in 4:12) and Josh Petrovich at 132 (forfeit).

At Kettle Moraine on Saturday, Hale beat Waterford, 40-28; Racine Case, 67-9; and Oak Creek, 52-21. Ryan Vankerkvoorde went 3-0 at heavyweight, while 4-1 marks were posted by Moyle, Allen, Wanta, John Baltz (106) and Kruzick.

Central girls basketball

Despite good all-around games by Mehryn Kraker and April Wildes, the Bulldogs fell to Hartland Arrowhead, 56-51, in their season opener on Friday night.

Kraker totaled 26 points, five steals and six rebounds, while Wildes contributed 11 points, five boards and two steals.

The Bulldogs will visit Sussex Hamilton on Friday night and will take on Oak Creek at 2:45 p.m. Saturday as part of the NY2LA Sports Classic at Homestead High School, playing against former coach Steve Hluchnik.

They will then visit West Allis Hale at 6 p.m. Tuesday as part of a girls-boys doubleheader.

Greenfield wrestling

The Hustlin' Hawks came in sixth with 103½ points in the Campbellsport Invitational on Saturday.

Alec Adams won the 126-pound class with a 3-0 mark, including an 8-6 decision over Jarred Vaughan of Hustisford in the championship.

Andrew Patrick took second at 120 with a 2-1 record and fourths were claimed by Dominic Kroll (138) and Tony Kurczewski (170).

Taking fifth were Adam Zieman (113), Mike Honeck (132), Victor Castro (145) and Tyler Dorfner (160).

Greenfield is coached this year by Daniel Jackson, who takes over for the retired Keith Morin.

Whitnall wrestling

The Falcons went 3-2 in dual meets at the East Troy Duals on Saturday.

Finishing unbeaten were Mason Howard at 145 pounds and Sam Howard at 182 pounds.

Offensively, the Hustlin' Hawks struggled last week in two losses.

They fell to New Berlin Eisenhower, 66-19, on Friday night and to Waterford, 53-30, on Nov. 29 to slip to 0-2 on the young season.

Amber Polachek tallied nine points and Tania Alvarez six against Waterford for the Hawks, who were still in range at 24-16 at the half.

They were out of the game early against the Lions, trailing 44-9 at halftime. Polachek once again led with nine points.

The Huskies had a hard time getting anything going against New Berlin West on Nov. 29, losing 76-26.

Erin Barbeau tallied 14 points, but the next-highest scorers were Rachel Seefeldt and Jennifer Stawicki with four points each.
