Punchless offense hurting West Allis Hale baseball team in GMC action
Solid pitching wasted in defeats
Despite some key injuries, the West Allis Hale pitching staff is hanging tough this season.
Last week, the Huskies lost senior Sam Michalski, who was coming off a no-hitter against Wauwatosa East, with a broken collarbone. Michalski's season and high school career are now finished.
Hale has endured other injuries to its staff and has used a number of new pitchers, including freshman Sam Valona, but the results have been strong.
The Huskies played five games last week in which they allowed no more than three runs but came away with just two victories, because the hitting has not matched up with the pitching.
Hale beat New Berlin West 4-3 on June 28 in the South Milwaukee Wood Bat Tournament and Franklin 5-3 on June 25 in Greater Metro Conference action.
The Huskies lost 2-0 to Oak Creek on June 26, 1-0 to Sussex Hamilton on June 24 and 3-2 to Brookfield Central on June 23.
They also dropped a 7-2 game to Brookfield East on June 27 in a game that did not fit the low-scoring pattern.
The Huskies came into this week at 7-9 in the conference and 10-14 overall, but head coach Paul Dooley knows that his team's record could be much better.
"If we scored five runs in some of these games, we would have about 16 wins this year," Dooley said.
Hale 5, Franklin 3: Derrick Oleson drove in two runs and Tyler Millikin, Alex Elliott and Jason Palesse one apiece, while Joe Jo Breznik and Cameron Holcomb each had two hits.
Palesse was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits while striking out five and walking three in seven innings.
Hale 4, N.B. West 3: Mason Ross lined two doubles and Elliott collected two hits for the Huskies, who overcome five errors to prevail. Valona picked up the pitching victory by working three innings.
Oak Creek 2, Hale 0: Breznik tossed a four-hitter but the Huskies managed only three hits themselves off DJ Ellifson.
Hamilton 1, Hale 0: Valona pitched a solid game, allowing three hits in six innings, but the Huskies were no-hit for the third time this season.
Central 3, Hale 2: Elliott went 3-for-3 and Valona and Isaiah Mundt each drove in one run. Mials McMurray struck out eight in six innings.
The Huskies finished regular-season GMC play against Franklin and Marquette earlier this week and now look forward to the conference tournament, which runs from Tuesday, July 8, to Thursday, July 10, all at Brookfield Central.
