Slippery fingers cost the West Allis Central football team in its 2013 season opener, a 35-8 defeat at Watertown.
"We were plagued by dropped passes," head coach Dax Rodriguez said. "We dropped five of them, including two that would have been touchdowns. These weren't even closely contested; they were wide open, and we flat-out dropped them."
Rodriguez said one dropped touchdown pass came when the score was still relatively close at 21-8.
"If we score there, it's 21-15, and it's a different game," he said.
Despite the lack of help from his receivers at times, quarterback Will Konecny completed 15 of 31 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown.
Rodriguez said that Konecny, in whom he has high hopes this season, played well for the most part.
The touchdown was a 33-yard pass to wide receiver Darren Walker in the third period. Running back Dushun Glover then tallied on a two-point conversion run to draw Central within 21-8.
The Bulldogs had stopped Watertown cold on the opening possession of the game, but they went three-and-out, and the snap on the ensuing punt went over the kicker's head, with the Goslings recovering at the Central 2-yard line.
Watertown's Matt Stock then ran in several plays later for a score that deflated the Bulldogs.
The Goslings added two more touchdowns for a 21-0 halftime advantage, but Central crept back into it on Walker's score.
After that, though, Watertown's Carson Keeser caught a 62-yard scoring pass from quarterback Casey Schuett to restore the lead to three scores.
"This game was not anywhere close to 35-8," Rodriguez said. "I thought we played well, especially in the second and third periods, but they hit on a couple of bombs. They executed and we didn't."
Central now hosts Catholic Memorial at 7 p.m. Aug. 30. The Crusaders, the defending WIAA Division 3 champions, routed Milwaukee Riverside 37-0 in their opener.
"We are certainly facing top-notch competition," Rodriguez said. "We just have to hold our own and shore up the little things."
