Sports Wrapups: March 16
Highlights of area high school sports
The Whitnall girls basketball teams' injury-plagued season came to a quick end with a 65-54 loss at Franklin in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal March 9.
The host Sabers came out hot with seven quick field goals, including three 3-pointers, while building an 18-11 first-quarter lead that they never relinquished.
Whitnall seniors Lisa Donaldson (15 points), Rachel Serio (15) and Amy Ford (13) closed out their prep careers with solid efforts.
"It was a good game. We just couldn't get over the hump," Whitnall coach Keith Larson said. "I thought our girls fought played hard on every possession."
The Falcons snapped their six-game losing streak just in time for the postseason.
Amy Ford scored 13 points and Jocelyn Gillum and Rachel Niles added nine each as Whitnall upended host Greenfield, 50-43, in the regular-season finale March 3.
The Falcons outscored the Hustlin' Hawks, 20-13, in the fourth quarter after the two teams were tied at 30-30 after three.
Whitnall finished 6-15. The team had just one practice the entire season in which everyone practiced together.
"Despite the setbacks, the team remained focused and worked hard every day," Larson said. "This is a credit to them and their work ethic. The positive is that many players gained the varsity experience they had been lacking and it should benefit them in the future."
West Allis Hale girls basketball
West Allis Central's post duo of Lauren Hibbard and Janie Myles were too much to overcome for the Huskies in a 48-25 season-ending loss March 9.
The Bulldog pair tallied 27 points in a regional semifinal at Central.
Hale got nine points from Erin Barbeau but no other player scored more than four as the Huskies finished their seventh straight losing season with just two wins in 23 tries.
The Huskies also lost their regular season finale, 41-24, at Port Washington on March 3.
Jennifer Wellnitz had 10 points for Hale.
Greenfield girls basketball
A solid start was thwarted by rough middle quarters as the Hustlin' Hawks fell at Waterford, 62-34, in a regional semifinal March 9.
After playing the host Wolverines even at 10-10 after one quarter, the Hawks were outscored, 36-11, in the second and third quarters combined.
Junior Kristina Vidakovich scored a game-high 13 points for the Hawks, who finished 2-20 overall and have just six wins in the last three seasons combined.
In the regular season finale, despite getting 25 combined points from Jessica Manzuk and Vidakovich, the Hawks lost, 50-43 to visiting Whitnall on March 3.
Amber Polachek added nine points for the Hawks, who were tied with their guests at 30-30 after three quarters.
West Allis Central boys basketball
The Bulldogs' once-promising season came to an end with a 65-49 regional semifinal loss at Racine Horlick on March 2.
It was Central's 13th loss in 15 games after the Bulldogs started out 7-1. They finished 9-14.
Against Horlick, Nick Starich made three 3-pointers en route to a team-high 13 points for Central, and Darvell Brown added 12.
Horlick's Jermaine Clemons and Davontae Mullen had 14 each.
Greenfield boys basketball
Greenfield's third loss of the season to rival Whitnall ended the Hawks' 2009-10 campaign.
The host Falcons outscored their guests by 16 points in the second half en route to a 62-45 victory in a WIAA D1 regional semifinal March 2.
Alec Molter had 15 points and Ricky Santiago added 12 for Greenfield, but it was not enough to offset the 32-point performance turned in by Whitnall senior William Pelkofer.
Greenfield finished the season 6-17 thanks to a season-ending six-game losing streak.
