West Allis Central football golf outing set for June 20

The ninth annual West Allis Central football golf outing and hall of fame banquet is set for Saturday, June 20, at the Evergreen Golf Club, N6246 Highway 12, Elkhorn.

The cost is $80 for each golfer in a foursome and only the first 120 golfers to sign up will be included. For dinner only, the cost is $30.

West Allis' Vis wrestles to second in Poland tourney

Ringers Wrestling School sent a group of 12 wrestlers to Poland recently to wrestle and for a cultural exchange.

One of the participants was West Allis Central High School freshman Eric Vis, who wrestled varsity for the Bulldogs this past season and placed second at 73 kilograms in the Mazowsze Cup of Freestyle Wrestling.

Teams from Poland, Germany, Russia, Latvia, Belarus and other countries participated.

Vis defeated a Russian wrestler by pin in the first round, then downed another Russian by decision before beating a third Russian by technical fall in the semifinals. In the finals, he lost to an opponent from Latvia.

The wrestlers will compete in some dual meets against two teams from Poland and do some sightseeing before returning to the United States on Monday, April 13.

Lady T-Birds seeking golfers for Thursday league

The Lady T-Birds Golf League of Greenfield Park is looking for new members for the 2009 spring/summer season.

The nine-hole league will begin play Thursday, May 7, and run through Thursday, Sept. 17.

Tee times range from 8:30 to 10 a.m.

Stritch's Stelloh named league's player of year

West Allis Hale High School graduate Michelle Stelloh, a member of the Cardinal Stritch University women's basketball team, has been named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Stelloh, a junior, led the Wolves in scoring, totaling 456 points during the season and breaking the 1,000 career point mark Feb. 18 against Purdue University-Calumet. She received first-team all-conference honors for the third consecutive year and led the team in 3-pointers made (65), free throws made (55), and steals (63) and ranked second on the team in rebounding at 5 per game. She posted her career high during the 2008-09 season, netting 28 points Nov. 21 against Lindenwood University.

She was the second-leading scorer in the conference at 15.2 points per game and ranked second in 3-pointers made with 65, third in steals per game with 2.11 and was in the top 10 in rebounding at 4.9 a game and in blocked shots with 16 for the season.

Stritch won the CCAC Tournament and began play in the NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, on March 11.

Greenfield High schedules boys basketball camp series

Greenfield High School will play host to summer boys basketball camps again this year.

The shooting camp is set for Monday through Thursday, July 13 through 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. while the basic skills camp is Monday through Thursday, July 20 through 23, from 1 to 3 p.m.

A defensive camp is slated for Tuesday through Thursday, July 28 through 30, from 1 to 3 and a scoring camp on Monday through Thursday, Aug. 3 through 6, from 1 to 3 p.m.

The cost is $70 for each camp, or all four for $260. All camps are held at the high school and directed by head boys coach Jim Nowak.

Golf instruction program scheduled at Deer Haven

The West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation Department will offer golf instructions for individuals ages 16 and up at Deer Haven Golf Course, 19180 W. Cleveland Ave., New Berlin.

The classes, taught by golf pro Jim Rewolinski, will offer instruction in all facets of the game. The classes will run for six weeks as follows:

Mondays, April 13 through May 18, adult beginners, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; adult intermediates, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Wednesdays, April 15 through May 20, adult beginners, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; adult intermediates, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m..

Saturdays, April 18 through May 23, any skill level, 9 to 10 a.m.

Students will be required to rent practice balls at each lesson at $3 of $6 and $1 for use of the putting green. The final lesson requires $5 for use of the course.

Registrations are being accepted at the West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation Department office, Parkway Center, 2930 S. Root River Parkway, West Allis, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Mail registrations will also be accepted. A drop box is available for after-hours registrations. Online registration is available at wawm.k12.wi.us/recreation.

Whitnall football program seeking assistant coaches

Whitnall High School football coach Rob Leboeuf is seeking enthusiastic individuals to help coach his program.

Experience working with student-athletes is preferred.

St. Thomas More adds Kosmatka to athletic hall

The late James Kosmatka, a longtime Greenfield resident, was posthumously inducted into the St. Thomas More High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Jan. 17.

Kosmatka's wife, Maureen, accepted his award. The hall includes athletes and coaches from St. Thomas More, Pio Nono and Don Bosco high schools and St. Francis Minor Seminary.

Kosmatka graduated from St. Francis Minor Seminary in 1948 and is the first athlete from that school inducted into the hall. He lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track and played quarterback in the Catholic All-Star Football Game in 1947 against the all-stars from Minneapolis, Minn.

SHAW team takes first in Baraboo hockey tourney

The Southeastern Hockey Association of Wisconsin (SHAW) Pee Wee A Division team, based out of Wilson Park, won the Baraboo Pee Wee Invitational recently, defeating teams from Dubuque (Iowa), Stoughton and Baraboo.

Members of the team are Max Trevison, Dylan Lengell, Matthew Wargolet, JJ Hartung, Trevor Krogmann, Brady Kais, Philip Miron, Jarod Hauke, Travis Nerad, Nathan Erickson, Colin Wilson, Patrick O'Donnell, Derrick Oleson, Sarah Landkowski and Oskar Bjornstad. The team is coached by Mike Wargolet and assistants Todd Oleson and Tom Bjornstad.

Deer Haven Golf Club organizing 2009 leagues

Mens, womens and co-ed leagues are forming at Deer Haven Golf Club, 19180 W. Cleveland Ave., New Berlin.

Whitnall grad Ranta earns weekly award at Harvard

Harvard University diver Zac Ranta of Hales Corners, a 2007 graduate of Whitnall High School, was named Harvard COOP student-athlete of the week Jan. 5.

The sophomore won the one- and three-meter diving events and qualified for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in the Crimson's 188-112 win over previously undefeated Navy on Jan. 3.

Ranta took first in the one-meter with 296.47 points and the three-meter with 349.51, outdistancing the second-place finisher by more than 80 points.

Ranta was the WIAA Division 2 state diving champion in 2007.

Local Special Olympians win places in state tourney

Area athletes were among the placewinners in the 2008 Special Olympics Wisconsin Fall Sports Tournament in the Milwaukee area.

Greenfield's Nicole Nemoure finished first, Samuel Rajchel fifth and Victoria Lawrence seventh in the bowling competition.

West Allis' Craig Becker helped his volleyball team place second.

More than 1,000 Special Olympics athletes, including Greenfield Special Olympics athletes, participated.

Registration in progress for three-on-three tourney

Registration has begun for the DJ's Court Tourney, a three-on-three, co-ed basketball tournament to benefit the Christine Rathke Memorial Fund.

The 16-team, double-elimination tourney will be played from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in the Franklin High School gym. The fee is $60 per team. Each teams is allowed one substitute for a total of four players.

Southwest YMCA offers club for area triathletes

The Southwest YMCA, 11311 W. Howard Ave., Greenfield, has formed a triathlon club.

The club's goal is to bring together athletes and assist in training for local triathlons.

This club is for YMCA members and has an enrollment cost of $25 per year.

Members will receive a training packet with information about how to train with the YMCA.

They will also receive training tips from professional triathlete Lauren Jensen.

Current club members range from first-timers to pro-level triathletes.
