West Allis Central picks up easy victory in first football game
Bulldogs dominate Hamilton by 40-0 count
After not recording any victories in its 2013 campaign, the West Allis Central football team wasted no time getting on the winning side this season.
The Bulldogs dominated both offensively and defensively in a 40-0 rout of Milwaukee Hamilton on Aug. 22 at the West Allis Athletic Complex.
Quarterback Will Konecny totaled 146 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns.
Running back Davon Jones racked up 176 yards rushing in 29 carries, and Brandon Driessen collected 82 yards on three receptions for Central, which bolted to a 34-0 halftime advantage.
Defensively, the Bulldogs allowed Hamilton five net yards, including negative yardage on the ground.
"This showed what we are capable of," said head coach Dax Rodriguez, who said during training camp that this year's squad is much better than last season's 0-9 outfit. "We came into the game with the right mindset. I was really happy watching the film. We were solid, and we looked like a team that knew what it was doing."
Rodriguez was pleased with Konecny's balanced effort on offense, as he collected 78 yards passing and 68 rushing.
"He had a big year throwing last year, but he knew to be the man this year he had to run the football as well," the coach said. "He ran effectively for us."
The Bulldogs had a little trouble at the start of the game, having a touchdown called back by a penalty and having to punt, but then Brent Hunter blocked a punt on the Wildcats' 24, and Central cashed in with a 20-yard scoring pass from Konecny to Driessen.
Central then went on a 65-yard march capped by a 12-yard touchdown run from Jones.
Later in the first quarter, Konecny hit Driessen for 52 yards to set up a 3-yard run by the quarterback for another score as the Bulldogs held a 20-0 lead after one period.
Johnson throws TD
Backup quarterback Griffin Johnson came in the game and found Hunter with a 6-yard touchdown pass to open the second period.
Konecny returned and ran for a 17-yard score as the Bulldogs opened it up to 34-0 at the half.
Konecny's 31-yard touchdown run closed out the scoring in the third quarter and started the running clock for the rest of the game.
The Central defense was led by tackle Calvin Stribbling with seven tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack; inside linebacker Brandon Perce with four tackles and an interception; and tackle Kenny Taylor with 51/2 tackles, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
The going will get much tougher for Central when it takes on Catholic Memorial at Carroll University at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.
"That will be infinitely tougher," Rodriguez said. "They (the Crusaders) are always good. They lost a lot from last season, but that team always rebuilds and is mammoth on the lines."
The Crusaders started their season by routing Milwaukee Riverside 40-7 last week behind four scores from Tommy Garza and 94 yards passing and two touchdowns from quarterback Alex Bray.
