West Allis wrestling teams fare well in GMC meet
Bulldogs, Huskies combine for five titles
Strong performances, including five individual championships, in Saturday's Greater Metro Conference Meet should provide the West Allis Central and West Allis Hale wrestling teams with plenty of momentum for the upcoming WIAA tournament.
The Bulldogs won two crowns, with those coming from Tyus White at 106 pounds and Mark Choinski at 145 pounds, and captured second place in the team standings with 211 1/2 points.
The Huskies took home three titles, won by Luke Ellis at 126 pounds, Jake Gruichich at 160 pounds and Dallas Wanta at 220 pounds, and finished third as a team with 197 points.
Neither squad was able to catch champion Menomonee Falls, which tallied 256 1/2 points to add the tournament title to its unbeaten dual mark this season.
Regional set for Saturday
Both coaches, though, were pleased with their teams' efforts and are looking forward to WIAA Division 1 regional action at 10 a.m. Feb. 15 at Brookfield Central High School.
"We're looking to keep the ball rolling and wrestle better at regionals to secure a team sectional dual meet (which goes to the team champion)," Central head coach Jon Nelson said. "We have two varsity guys coming back into the lineup for regionals who have been out for suspension. This should help us on Saturday."
Hale head coach Randy Ferrell said, "I know everyone is looking forward to having a great run in the tournament series."
For Central, White went 3-0 on the day in the GMC tournament, including a 12-2 major decision over Eric Wunsch of Falls in his title match.
"Tyus has a tough road to state, but is ready," Nelson said.
Choinski topped Casey Crangle of Falls, who is rated fourth in the state at 145 pounds, by an 8-5 count in his final match.
"That was a huge match for Mark," Nelson said of Choinski, who is dropping to 138 pounds for the regional meet.
For the Huskies, Ellis downed Jeff Kleser of Falls 10-3 in his title match, Gruichich beat Tyler Simcock of Falls 5-1 in his final and Wanta pinned James Wartman of Brookfield Central in 1 minute, 6 seconds in his title bout.
Helm upsets East foe
The Bulldogs took three second places: Tere White at 120 pounds, Mauricio Cardoso at 132 and Chris Helm at 152.
Helm had a notable victory in the semifinals when he nipped Josh Dempsey of Brookfield East 11-10. Helm then was pinned by Ryan Hernandez of Sussex Hamilton in 1:46 in the final.
Hale also had three seconds: John Baltz at 113 pounds, Ryan Sheard at 170 and Andrew Buelow at 182.
Taking third for Central were Vicente Cardoso (126), Jason Alvarez (170) and Robert Torres (220). For Hale, thirds were snared by Oliver Arena (120) and Jordan Shields (145).
Coming in fourth for the Bulldogs were Angel Navejar (113), David Anich (138) and Alexis Elvira (160). Charles Wagner finished fourth for Hale at 106 pounds.
Marcus Burns (182) and Laren Stadler (heavyweight) both placed fifth for Central. Zion Schum (138) and Justin Schroeder (195) both finished fifth for the Huskies.
Julien Moreno (152) and Tony Gibilian (heavyweight) both came in sixth for Hale.
"We have a number of guys battling back from injuries and are still having success," Ferrell said. "We are led by a great group of seniors: Ellis, Schum, Moreno, Gruichich, Sheard, Buelow,Wanta and Gibilian. Each one placed for us."
