Behind an experienced quarterback and some speedsters at wide receiver, the West Allis Central football team hopes to use its passing game to good effect this season.
The quarterback will be junior Will Konecny (6 feet, 2 inches and 185 pounds), who started six games for the Bulldogs last season and now has the third-most starts of any of this year's Greater Metro Conference passers.
"He has a good arm, and he plays basketball, so he also has good feet," Central head coach Dax Rodriguez said. "He knows the offense, and he has plenty of experience."
Konecny helped lead the Bulldogs to a 6-0 record in the Wisconsin Lutheran Passing League, which features a seven-on-seven format with no linemen.
His top target this fall will be senior Darren Walker (6-0, 170), who collected 450 yards receiving last season, averaging 30 yards per catch, and scoring four touchdowns.
Walker scored twice in the fourth period to help the Bulldogs earn their lone GMC triumph with a 22-20 decision over Marquette last season.
"He is one of the top returning receivers in the conference," Rodriguez said. "He has speed and great hands."
Actually, that holds true for a number of potential receivers this season.
"Our passing game should be solid," the coach said. "We have a lot of guys who can run and a lot of track guys this season."
Carrying the load on the ground will be senior Dushun Glover (6-0, 220) and senior Jason Alvarez (6-0, 205).
"Glover is going to surprise some people this year," Rodriguez said.
Leading the offensive line are senior Adonis Ancira-Murillo (6-2, 285), a three-year starter who tied several weight-lifting records in combines this off-season, and junior Robert Torres (5-10, 215).
Glover, another three-year starter, will also direct the Central defense from his strong safety position.
Other key defenders include senior linebacker Clint Johnson (5-10, 180), senior defensive end Bobby Reyes (6-0, 225) and Alvarez at linebacker.
"The kids have good knowledge of our offensive and defensive schemes," Rodriguez said. "They understand what's going on."
He said Sussex Hamilton is this year's favorite in the GMC but added that the league is well-balanced and wide-open after that.
Player to watch: Junior quarterback Will Konecny, who started six games last season and helped Central to a 6-0 record in the Wisconsin Lutheran Passing League this summer.
Date to circle: The Bulldogs will meet rival West Allis Hale on Sept. 20 at the West Allis Athletic Field. The game is always a big draw and often a closely-fought affair.
We say: Konecny, along with running backs Dushun Glover and Jason Alvarez and wide receiver Darren Walker, all return on offense. If the defense can come together, the Bulldogs could be competitive in the rugged Greater Metro Conference.
