Huskies finish 1-2 in GMC tourney

Hale competitive with league powers

West Allis - A victory over Brookfield East and close losses to the top two teams in the Greater Metro Conference made for a strong showing for the West Allis Hale baseball team last week.

The Huskies downed East, 9-7, on July 5 in the middle game of the GMC Tournament. They opened the tournament with a 12-9 defeat at the hands of Oak Creek on July 3 and finished the event with a 10-7 loss to top seed Menomonee Falls on Friday.

They also dropped a 3-0 game to Muskego in the GMC regular-season finale on July 2.

The Huskies wound up 9-11 in the Greater Metro Conference (14-15-1 overall) and started WIAA tournament play July 10 against St. Thomas More.

If they won, they would play at second seed New Berlin West at 5 p.m. July 13 in a regional championship game. The regional winner will play at Hale at 2 p.m. July 16 in a sectional semifinal contest. The sectional title game is at Hale at 5 p.m. that day.

Hale 9, Brookfield East 7: Garet Morgenroth went 3-for-4 with a double for the Huskies, while Alex Elenteny, Marcel Mundt, Nick Sotiros, Dan Sotiros and Taylor Tomczak each collected two hits.

Hale won the game with three runs in the top of the seventh and scored five of its nine runs in the final two innings.

Oak Creek 12, Hale 9: Stephen Metzdorf drove in two runs and Elenteny, Brian Kimpel, Mundt and Dan Sotiros each brought in one run. Elenteny and Kimpel both posted three hits and Mundt and Nick Sotiros both two hits.

Falls 10, Hale 7: Dan Sotiros and Sam Versnik each drove in two runs and Elenteny, Morgenroth and Zach Smith each one run. Collecting two hits apiece were Steve Acker, Elenteny, Patrick Heal, Morgenroth and Versnik. Elenteny took the loss on the mound.

Muskego 3, Hale 0: Nick Sotiros went 3-for-3 and Tomczak 2-for-3 against ace Josh Breider, who allowed six hits. Kimpel took the tough-luck loss for the Huskies, giving up five hits and striking out three.
