West Allis — -The swimmers for the West Allis girls team this fall will not have to look far to find a role model for work ethic and dedication.
Their new head coach, Carl Kaiser, has plenty of experience in not only swimming, but also marathon running and triathlon.
Kaiser was involved with the University of Wisconsin-Madison triathlon team and served as a workout leader for bicycle rides and swim practices. He later self-trained for two Ironman distance events and placed third in his age group at the 2009 Ironman in Wisconsin, qualifying for the Hawaii World Championships.
He also ran well enough at the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon in October to qualify for this year's Boston Marathon.
"I have a passion for the training, physiology and challenge of endurance sports, like swimming," he said.
He has been coaching with the Wauwatosa Swordfish aquatics team since January 2010 and is currently working as an assistant swim coach for the Pius XI boys squad. He is a USA-certified swim coach and a Red Cross-certified safety instructor as well.
Kaiser is working as a substitute teacher at West Allis Hale for this school year. He previously was a biology sub at Central High School.
"I loved the school, the students and the support of the staff (at Central), so I did not hesitate to take on this challenge," said Kaiser, who takes over for Brian Temke. "I look forward to helping the swimmers develop a love for the sport. My hope is that they incorporate swimming or some sort of athletics into their lifestyle for the rest of their lives."
