West Allis delays decision on how to use redevelopment tax dollars

A plan to move excess funds from one special redevelopment district that is doing well to two others that are not yet self-sustaining rather will be considered by the West Allis Administration and Finance Committee at a special meeting Monday.

The committee decided Tuesday that the matter requires more time for debate than was available at the recess portion of Tuesday's Common Council meeting.

The committee will try to decide which scenario benefits taxpayers the most: using the excess dollars from the successful Quad Graphics tax incremental financing district to keep two less successful TIF districts out of financial trouble, or divided the money among the schools, MATC, Milwaukee County and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District to help them keep their levies down. Either way, taxpayers would not get tax relief directly.

The committee will make a recommendation to the full council, which would then make the final decision. The next council meeting is Feb. 19.
