Union Pacific Railroad to be compelled to fix crossing in West Allis

May 8, 2014

The first step will be taken to get the Union Pacific Railroad to fix its crossing on Greenfield Avenue at about 66th Street that got so bad this winter that West Allis had to step in and make emergency repairs.

Drivers encountered holes up to six-inches deep.

The West Allis Common Council will press the railroad for repairs under state statutes allowing communities to require crossings to be fixed.

"In all likelihood we'll be successful," said Public Works Director Michael Lewis.

It took the city more than year to get the Union Pacific to fix a crossing at National Avenue, he said. The railroad put in a patch, not concrete as ordered by the Office of the Railroads Commissioner, Lewis said.

Ultimately, the railroad used concrete to make repairs.
