Input hearing today

on five-year plan

West Allis — The Development Department along with the Block Grant Committee will host a public information meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 to consider public comment and ideas in developing goals and objectives for the city's proposed 2014-2018 Five-Year Consolidated Plan.

During the meeting, held in the Common Council Chambers of the West Allis City Hall, city staff members will outline goals developed in the 2010-2014 Consolidated Plan. The public can share ideas, concepts and recommended goals and objectives for the proposed new plan for fiscal years 2014-2018.

The plan outlines the need for federal funds in the city and presents a series of recommendations, both short-term and long-term, to address the needs. The document outlines goals to assist low-moderate income persons and areas, and to address the presence of slum and blight within the community.

Cupcakes raise

cash for CAAD

West Allis — The Fan Zone Challenge of Cupcakes for a Cause on Aug. 11 raised $200 for the Community Alliance Against Drugs.

The People's Choice Award went to the Baby Ruth Cupcakes and the Cause's Choice Prize was awarded for the On Wisconsin Vanilla Raspberry Cupcakes.

Cupcakes for a Cause is in desperate need of bakers for the Heart Healthy Challenge on Nov. 17.

FIRE closes financing

with software company

West Allis — First-Ring Industrial Redevelopment Enterprise, Inc., a regional Community Development Entity, formed by West Allis to support economic development through the use of new market tax credits has closed a $300,000 financing package with Dynamis Software Corp.

The company, located at 1126 S. 70th St., West Allis, specializes in providing health insurance brokerage software solutions and will use the loan to grow.

"FIRE is excited to offer a new lending product," said John Stibal, president of FIRE and West Allis development director, in a news release announcing the plan. Stibal said Dynamis President Andrew Nunemaker has a proven record of success in the software businesses and has demonstrated strength and vision to take a software product to the health insurance brokerage industry.

FIRE has ventured into providing financial assistance to businesses that will be important to growing the region, Stibal said. Dynamis expects to double the size of its staff in the next three years.

FIRE also helped Dynamis leverage additional funds from the Milwaukee Economic Development Corporation and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.

"Providing new tools to assist businesses start and succeed is an important part of FIRE's mission," said West Allis Alderman Michael Czaplewski, chairman of FIRE's board of directors.

This year's fair

way better than fair

West Allis — Wisconsin State Fair Park officials announced that the 2013 Wisconsin State Fair was a big year year on many levels.

Mild temperatures, low humidity and very little rain served as a backdrop for a nearly 10 percent increase in attendance over the 2012 fair, they said. More than 1 million visited the fair this year compared with 920,962 last year. This was the largest reported attendance since 1969, though truly accurate attendance records, based on the scanning of tickets at the gates, have only been available since 2002.

All three major auctions during the fair were successful. The Governor's Red, White & Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction raised $239,750, nearly $18,000 more than 2012. The Grand Champion Steer exhibited by Dan Spoerlein sold for $30,000. The Governor's Blue Ribbon Meat Products Auction raised more than $80,000 and set a new record for the Grand Champion Flavored Bacon, from Newton Meats, which sold for $6,200. The Blue Ribbon Cheese & Butter Auction raised more than $30,000.

Much of the money raised at these auctions contributes to youth scholarships.

Fairgoers took more than 120,000 slides down the famous Giant Slide on their burlap sacks, almost 1,400 people were catapulted 170 feet into the air in the Ejection Seat, going from 0-70 miles per hour in less than 3 seconds and more than 16,000 young adults enjoyed the power jump trampolines.

Shelter reduces

cat adoption fees

West Milwaukee — The Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control is reducing kitten and cat adoption fees throughout August and September to encourage people to adopt their next feline companions from the shelter.

The adoption fee for cats 6 months and older is $14 and the fee for kittens is $50. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, microchip identification, and FeLV/FIV testing.

More than 6,000 stray kittens and cats arrive at MADACC each year. In 2012, fewer than 300 of them were reclaimed by an owner.

Potential adopters can request an adoption application by emailing adoptmadacc@gmail.com.

Applications can also be filled out at MADACC from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends.
