Milwaukee Plumbing acquires Germantown firm
West Allis - Milwaukee Plumbing & Piping Inc., 11300 W. Greenfield Ave., has acquired A-n-M Plumbing.
A-n-M owner Ron Mihm is retiring after serving the Germantown area for more than 24 years.
Al Holtz, president and master plumber of Milwaukee Plumbing & Piping, said the acquisition will enable his company to better serve its customers in Germantown and neighboring communities.
Milwaukee Plumbing & Piping Inc. offers a wide range of residential and commercial plumbing services throughout Milwaukee and the surrounding counties, including plumbing and piping installations, sewer and drains, home appliance connections, water lines, medical gas installation, solar heating systems, mechanical piping, boilers, pump repair and installation, and routine and preventive maintenance.
Hoover teacher chosen for $1,000 award
West Allis - West Allis-West Milwaukee School District teacher Amber Carstens was surprised Tuesday with the award of $1,000 to buy school supplies from the OfficeMax A Day Made Better program.
Carstens, who teaches grades two and three at Hoover Elementary School in New Berlin, was among 1,000 teachers nationally who have been nominated by their principals for their extraordinary efforts in the classroom.
OfficeMax is making the awards in recognition that teachers routinely buy classroom supplies out of their own pockets. OfficeMax and AdoptAClassroom.org joined together to create A Day Made Better in an effort to help ease the financial burden on teachers.
Downtown bedecked with purple ribbons
West Allis - With October being , Members of the Woman's Club of West Allis tied purple ribbons around trees in downtown West Allis in recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Purple is the color representing domestic violence.
Two woman's club members, Annabelle Weishan and Alexea Davis are also co-chairmen for the General Federation of Women's Clubs- Wisconsin Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Signature Project.
They also have arranged for Clear Channel Outdoor to put up billboards around the area bringing awareness to the problem of domestic violence. The billboards will stay up throughout October.
West Allis official leads consortium to national honor
West Allis - The city's Health department director, Darren Rausch, is chairman of a 13-community consortium that was recognized for exceptional emergency preparedness by the National Association of County and City Health Officials.
The organization honored the consortium for being ready to handle large-scale public health emergencies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took part in the selection process.
The consortium demonstrated that member agencies can work collaboratively to handle bioterrorism events, new epidemics, natural disasters and other public health related emergencies.
Since 2006, only 270 local public health agencies out of about 2,800 health departments across the nation have received the recognition.
Drumstick Dash new family tradition?
West Allis - The Drumstick Dash 5K, a benefit for Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin in what its sponsor hopes will become a new Thanksgiving Day family tradition, is coming to the Wisconsin State Fair Park at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 22.
The 3.1-mile run will take participants around the historic Milwaukee Speedway and past additional landmarks within the State Fair Park. Nonperishable food donations will be collected race day and monetary donations will be accepted prior to the dash for Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.
The cost is $30 for adults, $20 for ages 5 to 12, and free for ages 4 and younger.

About 330,000 people in eastern Wisconsin rely on food supplied by Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin each year. The food bank is the largest, private, nonprofit distributor of food in the state.
The event is presented by Balistreri-owned and operated Sendik's Food Markets.
