Sanfelippo files for state representative seat

West Allis - After announcing his intention to run for the 15th State Assembly District, Joe Sanfelippo of West Allis has filed his nomination papers.

The newly redrawn district includes parts of West Allis and New Berlin.

Some of the issues Sanfelippo will highlight during his campaign include establishing a property tax cap for seniors, eliminating the taxing authority for unelected boards, and promoting trade and technical school opportunities.

Sanfelippo has been a Milwaukee County supervisor since 2008. He has been a small business owner and operated a company that employed over 60 people. Sanfelippo and his wife Becky have been married for 24 years and have three children.

Hale teacher wins national recognition

West Allis - Michael Ellery, a teacher at Nathan Hale High School, has been named a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar and will attend one of 15 NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops.

He was one of only 80 teachers nationwide named Summer Scholars.

Ellery will attend a workshop titled "The Most Southern Place on Earth: Music, History and Culture in the Mississippi Delta." The weeklong program will be at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss.

Area students win honors at leadership conference

West Allis - Eight West Allis-West Milwaukee high school students placed in the top five at the Health Occupations Students of America state leadership conference held recently at the Wisconsin Dells.

Five came in with second place finishes. Katherine Hibbard and Rebecca Simet, both of West Allis Central, took second in the CPR/first aid event; Wendy Watkinson, Central, took second in extemporaneous writing; Mitchell Mares, Central, was second in extemporaneous speaking, and Jessica Rampetsreiter, Nathan Hale, was second in veterinary assisting.

Kimbery Kay, Central, took third in the concepts of health care knowledge test; Bria Meier, Samantha Stiehm, Mitchell Mares and Wendy Watkinson, all of Central, took fourth in the HOSA Bowl event; and Rebecca Krizan, Central, took fourth in the dental terminology test and fifth in the medical assisting event.

Rebecca Simet, Katherine Hibbard, Wendy Watkinson and Rebecca Krizan of Central and Jessica Rampetsreiter of Hale, will compete in the HOSA national conference in Orlando, Fla., in June.
