Youth group sponsors council candidate forum

The West Allis Youth Commission will sponsor a Common Council Candidate Forum beginning at 6 p.m. March 19 at West Allis City Hall, 7525 West Greenfield Ave.

The public forum, to be held in the Common Council Chambers, will include adermanic candidates responding to questions from the Youth Commission.

The Forum will be shown on Cable Channels 14 and 25.

Cellular Connection connects with West Allis

West Allis - The Cellular Connection, a Verizon wireless retailer, has opened a store at 2840 S. 108th St.

The store held a grand opening celebration earlier in March.

TCC, founded in Marion, Ind., in 1991, has more than 750 locations across 26 states and more than 15 in Wisconsin.

Forum to be held for Whitnall candidates

Greenfield - A candidate forum for the four candidates running for the Whitnall School Board will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 28 in the School Board/community room at Whitnall High School, 5000 S. 116th St., Greenfield.

Voters will elect two of the four to the board in the April 3 election.

So far, road projects cheaper than expected

Greenfield - Bids on the first of four batches of Greenfield road projects slated for 2012 came in 8 percent under expectation, said Richard Sokol, the city's director of neighborhood services.

City officials are hoping that the other road projects bundled in three more batches for bidding will show the same trend in the coming weeks. The total cost for all four batches is an estimated $4 million. Most of the work is in residential neighborhoods.

But, in a separate package, 124th Street, which is more heavily traveled, also is slated to be rebuilt this year from Grange Avenue to Cold Spring Road. That will be an inconvenience not only for through traffic, but for motorists using ramps to Interstate 43.

The 124th Street project is not part of the other bidding packages because it's being done in cooperation with New Berlin and Hales Corners and with the help of a federal grant covering 80 percent of the cost.

Work at library by young Greenfield artists

Greenfield - In recognition of March as Youth Art Month, the Greenfield Public Library, 5310 W. Layton Ave., is featuring art by Greenfield School District students.

A reception was held March 4 at the library that included a hands-on art activity sponsored by the Milwaukee Art Museum's Kohl's Color Wheels program.

Historians remember Greenfield's largest lake

Greenfield - Maps, photos and information about Boldt's Lake, once Greenfield's largest lake, is on display at the Greenfield Public Library 5310 W. Layton Ave., in the Greenfield Historical Society's showcase on the upper level.

The display that will be up through May also contains information on the family who once owned the lake.
