Grant adds to West Allis-West Milwaukee School District's financial literacy

April 9, 2013

In addition to obtaining dollars for a soccer field, the West Allis-West Milwaukee schools scored another grant recently, with the announcement of $30,000 received from the state Department of Public Instruction for the district's financial literacy program.

State education officials were so impressed with the financial literacy program that they approved the grant to help nurture it.

Financial literacy teaches students about real life finances such as keeping and balancing a checkbook, making a budget, finding the best prices on consumer products for their families use now and that they will use once they graduate and get out on their own.

The grant will enable the schools to improve its financial literacy units for grades six through eight and refine an elective high school personal finance course. Some of the grant also will be used to send more high school business education teachers to the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions summer institutes.
