Is the city doing enough to fix flooding problems?

June 26, 2009

Some residents in West Allis got swamped for the second year in a row when heavy rains fell last week. Many of the same areas that were impacted by torrential rains and flooding last June were hit hard again by storms Thursday and Friday, which dropped 4.7 inches of rain in West Allis. Those areas include 82nd Street and Greenfield Avenue, 56th and Mitchell streets, Root River Parkway and an area near Highway 100 and Lincoln Avenue.

The city is handing out free flood-assistance kits and Mayor Dan Devine convened a town hall. Is that enough or should the city be doing more to help affected residents? Let us know what you think in our forum!

NO!!! My property taxes go up every damn year & this is the kind of lip service I get from City Hall?? How about find the problem, fix the problem and don't charge me for it. We all know it rained very hard so save us the tired out speech................... On a side note, when you raise the property taxes on everyone how about raising the level of service also. Money sucking bums!!!!

Read my post here: http://www.westallisnow.com/blogs/communityblogs/48805902.html and it is post #34. If I can take a cheap cellphone GPS unit and come up with some interesting details, the city should have the proper equipment to do a proper land survey with the appropriate checks. At least that is what my taxes and elected officials are there for to ensure. Maybe I am hoping for way too much. I have a feeling that the study would have to be sent out to a third-party company, spending more money, dealing with delay, not getting the requested information we need. I could go on with this list but we all know the reasons. In the meantime, I am going to continue with my own research on this, just for fun and to keep my chops sharp.

Yes they are. But I suppose some people think that the city can control the rain, snow, lightning etc... Things happen, yes it sucks, but why does everyone think that they have to have evrything done by the government. Clean out your own damn basements, help your neighbors, get insurance, Thats what we have done in the past. We did not sit around and whine like a bunch "service sucking bums" leeching off the government. Where did this "the world owes me everything attitude" come from. Maybe Obama can print more money and send it to these whiners in West Allis. I pay alot of taxes here in West Allis too. It is my choice to live here. I think the Mayor and alderman are doing a very good job keeping our city services at the level they are based on this economic climate we live in. But I am sure that there are some that think they are owed some warm cookies and a good back rub because they taxes.

I'm not sure if I think they need to be doing anything for us as tax paying residents. Finding the solution to why we have been having more flooding than usual recently, would be a good thing. I have lived at my residence for over 13 years and the last two years are the only times that the water level was to this extreme. Unfortunately I live in one of the hard hit areas. If I remember correctly, there was a very large storm that hit our area in 1998 (large enough to make the papers in Colorado) and the system was able to handle that.

The citizens of West Allis are spoiled! The city comes in and sanitizes basements that where flooded, people whined that we only would do the floor and not move anything for them. Flood debris was put out at curb and alley and the city had 3 crews working for a week picking it up for them. People whined that it was the cities way of shutting people up, "it was the least they could do, we don't do anything anyways," was a comment I heard. Every area of the city that was hit hard the city has done some kind of work to prevent flooding. IT WAS JUST TOO MUCH RAIN FOR THE SYSTEM TO HANDLE, PERIOD. I pay $5,000 in taxes but I live in Muskego. Guess what! If my basement floods the city doesn''t come in and sanitize my basement or come within a day or two when I call to pickup flood debris. I HAVE TO DO IT MYSELF! So stop your whinning West Allis you are getting way more than your monies worth with city services. And another revelation, your entire tax bill does not go to public works so stop the old " I pay taxes" everytime your not happy with public works.
