Emmett Till exhibit Saturday chronicles murder of black teen in Mississippi

Jan. 24, 2014 4:11 p.m. | An exhibit depicting the aftermath of a 1955 murder that helped spur the American civil rights movement will be showcased Saturday at an open house at the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District administrative building, 1205 S. 70th St..

The event, held from 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., comes near the end of a month-long run for the Emmett Till Traveling Exhibition, which has been on display at the district since Jan. 6. It will be taken down Feb. 7.

Emmett Till, the exhibit's namesake, was a 14-year-old African-American boy from Chicago who was kidnapped and murdered in 1955 while visiting relatives in Mississippi for allegedly whistling at a white woman. Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, who were tried for the crime and acquitted by an all-white jury, later confessed their guilt.

The newspaper articles and headlines that resulted form a significant part of the exhibit's 10 freestanding panels, which also include family photographs, oral histories and personal correspondences.

Saturday's open house will feature historical presentations by West Allis-West Milwaukee students who have conducted research related to the exhibit, according to a district press release. Artistic and musical performances and a guest lecture by Devery Anderson, who wrote a forthcoming book on the murder, are also planned.

Jan. 20, 2014 7:00 a.m. | Toldt Development Inc.'s Six Points apartment community, in West Allis, will add 115 units under a $10 million proposal pending before city officials.

The one- and two-bedroom apartments will be in two four-story buildings, to be developed on 2.6 acres south of W. National Ave. and west of the West Allis Farmers Market, at S. 66th St., according to a city report.

Six Points already has four buildings with 178 units south of W. Greenfield Ave. and west of S. 65th St.

Construction is expected to begin this spring, with a completion date in the spring of 2015.

Toldt is proposing 128 underground parking stalls and 138 surface stalls for the site. The base layer for the parking areas is already complete, and acts as an environmental cap as part of the environmental cleanup work that was done on the site last summer, the city report said.
