Ideas for Container Gardening

annual, bloom, color, container gardening, design, fertilize, flower, garden, outdoor, perennial, planning, plant, spring, water

Now that Spring is here (almost) I'm sure the gardeners reading this are starting to dream of beautiful flowers blooming in their yards.  It's also the time for gardening catalogs showing up in mailboxes, sales flyers for Steins and coupons from smaller greenhouses.  I always treasure The Gardener's Idea Book from Proven Winners that comes in the mail.  I got on their email list a few years ago and they automatically mail it out.  http://www.provenwinners.com/ Proven Winners are particularly hardy annuals, perennials and shrubs and are available at several outlets. Their website will search for retailers near you.  If you are a beginning gardener, they have lists of the easiest plants to grow and will make you look like a star if you follow their advice and water and feed your plants correctly.

Seeds 101

annual, care, garden, lettuce, indoor, planning, plant, prepare, seeds, spring, tomato, vegetable, winter, storage

It's time to start some seeds indoors if you are the type that likes to do this.  It's not for everyone, but if you have the time it can be really rewarding.  I find it really helps pull you out of the winter doldrums most of us gardeners have as it gets us actually "doing" something garden-like instead of just dreaming about it!

Shrubs With Fall Color

bloom, Fall, garden, landscape, outdoor, rose, wisconsin, yard, shrub, color

September is here and soon it will feel like fall.  I like to have plants in my yard that give nice fall color because after summer is over and flowers are mostly done blooming, I miss the color they offered.  There are flowers you can buy (mums, ornamental kale, etc), but why not add some shrubs to you landscape that also give fall color?  Here's a few that are beautiful in the fall:

What Can I Plant Under Pine Trees?

flower, garden, perennial, plant, plants, planting bed, tree, water, wisconsin, yard, dry, pine, acidic

I've been asked this several times and last week I responded off the top of my head azaleas, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and some types of berries.  But then I got to thinking.... it would be nice to be able to plant a bigger variety of things under pines, since that understory of empty space seems like such a wasteland.  I did some online research and came up with many choices and some that I will definitely try!

USDA Unveils NEW Plant Hardiness Zone Map

annual, biodiversity, education, garden, plant, planning, spring, wisconsin, winter

Great News!  After 20 years, the USDA has updated the Plant Hardiness Zones!  Beware, our Zone 4 (or 5 depending on where you live) has now become Zone 5b (-15 to -10F).  The new 13 zone map has been brought into the internet age with GIS-based interactive maps and more accurate zones that take into consideration things like elevation, terrain, and closeness to bodies of water.  Using a 30 year timespan (unlike the 1990 version that used a 13 yr span), many more weather stations, and expert input from the climatic and horticultural community, the map is much more accurate than it was plus it shows a 5 degree increase (warmer) overall for the US.

What To Do About Spring Bulbs Popping Up Early

bulb, flower, garden, landscape, plant, prevention, protect, rose, spring, winter, yard, bloom

With all this warm weather lately, the plants think Spring is almost here!  I noticed buds on trees that are easily seen as I drive by, tulips are trying to poke through the ground, and my parsley is still green and growing in the back yard!

Be Careful When Salting in the Winter – What it Does to Your Yard

garden, landscape, lawn, perennial, planning, prevention, protect, rose, tree, winter, yard, salt, grass

Winter in Wisconsin – of course we need to use salt to melt dangerous ice - but salting can be very damaging to many landscape plants and grasses, so please be careful with how much you salt your walks and driveways. Additionally, we can’t control how much salt is applied in the street that sprays up onto your yards. Here’s some good techniques (from the Steins Gardening Calendar) to help avoid plant damage:

Bumblebee In a Pollen Coma

We've been watching bees the last few days on my giant marigolds. They fly into the flowers and seem to just go into a coma. I thought they we're dying! But they eventually start moving and then fly away. Very strange!

What Kind of Lettuce is That?

lettuce, plant, vegetable, garden, weed, identify, food, plants

I planted a mixed variety of lettuce in my garden this year and as I watched it grow I wondered exactly what kinds of lettuce it was. One of the plants in the row didn’t look like a type of lettuce, so I wasn’t sure if I should  pull them out because they were weeds or leave them because they were some type that I didn’t recognize.  I decided to find out – after all, I didn’t want to eat it and find out its poisonous or something!  The package said “Mesclun”, which I knew meant “mixed”.  I dug out the seed packet and in fine print it listed quite a few types.  I looked for pictures of them on the internet just to be sure.  This is what I found.

Healthy Roses

"Roses are a favorite in so many gardens. But let's face it, those gorgeous flowers are sometimes accompanied by various rose diseases and pests. Is there an alternative to regular pesticide applications to keep these beauties producing the blossoms we so covet? Definitley, but it takes starting with the right rose and just a little attention throughout the season."  via www.rose.org

Preparing a New Planting Bed

garden, landscape, outdoor activity, pest, plants, water, yard, planting bed, vegetable, prepare

I get asked often about how to start a new planting bed - for flowers, veggies, whatever.  We had a planting bed on the side of the house that got all day sun, and had very little growing there, so we decided to use it to grow tomatoes and peppers.  I documented the steps in pictures as we went through it.

Squirrel War

Move over bunnies, my next enemy is the squirrel.  These tree rats cause a lot of havoc in our yards, eating bird seed, digging up lawns, shorting out transformers, snipping off buds on trees and shrubs, and when populations are large they can also eat the bark on trees like rabbits do.

Rabbit Wars

bulb, garden, landscape, lawn, parks, perennial, plants, spring, yard, tree, rabbit, pest, winter

I look out my front window seething, watching well-fed bunnies happily hopping all around my yard. Don't let them fool you - even though they are fluffy and cute, they are pure evil under all that silky soft fur and innocent demeanor.  Just ask Elmer Fudd and his friends – who have hunted and tracked their silly prey for over 70 years.  Bugs Bunny is less interested in escape than in driving his pursuer insane and can be heard to say (with casual unconcern), “What’s Up, Doc?”.  Well, bunnies, I will hunt you down, trap you all, and get rid of you – for the next 70 years if I have to!  You have eaten your last tulip just as it opens up – sawing off the flower stem with a diagonal bite and leaving the flower petals to dry up on the lawn in the spring sun.  To use your own catchphrase, "Of course you realize this means war!" This is not fun and games.  You seriously have to go.

Yard Problems To Look For

education, garden, home, landscape, yard, tree, water

There has been a few days in the last couple of weeks that were nice enough to get out into my yard.  I was itching to get out there!  I moved into my current home in late November, so I had no clue as to what types of perennials or bulbs or woody shrubs I had.  I'm anxious to assess the yard, see what is already there and determine what stays and what goes. There are a lot of things I want to change about it - and I was making mental notes as I did a thorough walk around.  There are many aesthetic things I want to change, but there are a few things that if not corrected quickly will result in bad things happening. Here's a few of the bad things I found:

Genetically Modified Seeds - Made To Live Up To RoundUp

farm, food, garden, plants, seeds

I did not know this, and after I read the article below, I'm not sure that I ever wanted to know this.  I know from living in a farming community that seed companies are making seeds such as corn resistant to RoundUp so that it is easy to spray for weeds as farmers are tending their crops. But I didn't know that they are now genetically altering the seeds, and also doing the same with seeds that we buy as residential back yard garden growers.

What's in a Color?

garden, plants, yard, landscape, design

I've found that landscapers first pay a lot of attention to solving functional needs, creating the hardscapes and paths, and picking plants to cover or focus on an area.  These are important things that need to be planned, but it seems that color ends up being the last consideration.  When someone asks me for help to design their yard, one of the first things I ask them are what colors do they like and dislike.  When you sit down in your backyard to relax, what do you want to look at?  If you hate yellow and you have a yard filled with Stella D'Oro daylillies, it would be a bit upsetting.  That is why I make sure that color is part of the plan from the beginning.

Spring Cleaning

garden, plants, yard, spring, bulb, perennial

As the days get warmer I am compelled to get outside and start looking at my flower beds.  We moved to this house in late November, so I have no idea what spring flowers may pop up, and what perennials will emerge soon.  I did a walk around the last few days to see if I can see some bulbs popping up, and I did notice a few, but there were some obvious empty places still.  Friends that live in the Waukesha area have told me that their spring flowers are already up and blooming!

World Seed Banks

Every once in awhile I would hear or read something about world seed banks, but they always seemed shrouded in mystery and hidden away.  Articles never really said much about where they are and how they worked.  Could I make a withdrawal if I wanted to plant something exotic?  Could I send them seeds of my favorite marigold?  Can I trade my snapdragon seeds for some heirloom sunflower seeds?

For the Birds

bird, , yard, outdoor activity, garden, food

Why do we feed the birds? Because we want to watch them! I always feel bad for the birds that have to brave our cold winters, so I make sure that they always have something to eat if they are anywhere near my yard.  You can provide most any type of bird seed and you will attract birds, but if you'd like a variety of birds, you need to use the right type of feeders and fill them with their preferred food.

Not A Lot For A Gardener to Do In The Winter

garden, indoor, plants, yard

This time of the year we gardeners can't garden. This is one of the many reasons I hate winter.  With time on your hands your mind starts to wander - you worry about your plants freezing, you are wondering if bunnies are eating the tender bark of your shrubs and hoping that the birds are using your plants for food and shelter.  What else can you do?  Many of us take this time to make plans for the changes they want to make to their landscapes in the spring.  One of my favorite things to do is to go through seed catalogs.  Another favorite thing I do is to hit my stack of gardening magazines that I never seem to have time for during the growing season.
