Laura's Corner
I work very hard and am attending college to obtain my degree in the Human Service field. Writing makes me feel alive and gives me the opportunity to touch those whom I would not be able to otherwise. Last but not least, I have been blessed with two amazing daughters who love me completely and support my dreams. Feel free to contact me with questions, concerns or feedback.

In thinking about the recent events, I am appalled by the current plea by Michael Vick....
I believe what appauls me more is the reaction by the general public. We had a true division of those who supported him and those who did not. I am definitely not in favor of those who support him. I do not know of many who do... But, on the other hand, I am also not in favor of those who do not support him... Let me explain why.
As soon as we found out that there was a guilty plea, many folks auctioned their autographed cards and sports memorabilia on different internet sites. They donated their winning big to their local animal shelter. Many folks sent their sports jerseys to the shelter to use for bedding or "pooper scoopers"... Kudos to all who sacrificed their money to support such a worthy cause...
The reason I do not support these people is simple. Many times, each and every day we hear of children, women and others who are abused, killed, raped and molested. Babies and young children are being exploited on a daily basis for the sick and twisted desire of many adults. How about those foster children who have been locked up in cages, starved, with little or no education? Why on earth are people so quick to support their local animal shelter but yet forgo their local women and childrens safehomes? Do we go sell our prized possessions for children who have been victims of violence? When was the last time people supported their local boys and girls clubs? Do you have anything of value in your garage, basement, attic that is taking up space? Ever think if selling that on an internet auction site and donating any of the money to the Children's Hospital? Ever consider adopting or supporting a family which has chosen to do so? Look in your closets. Do you have anything that does not fit, or something that still has tags on? Consider donating it to your nearest shelter. A few places to consider: The Joy House, Boys and Girls Club of America, a homeless shelter, a family in need. Call your local church, somewhere like Elmbrook Church. They have many outreach services and assist those in need. Many of these places save lives. Many give hope and homes to those who are truly down and out.
Let me make a suggestion, donate or volunteer one time and see how you feel. Even if you are busy, and have a family of your own, please take your family and donate or volunteer together. Once a year. That is all it takes. I promise you, not only will you be blessed, but your entire family will learn the true meaning of life, and change the lives of those you touch..
