Day 3 from 2012 (includes links to all previous Day 3s)

We didn't go anywhere near the Wisconsin State Fair Grounds today, so my comments are from afar.

Watching the 9:00 PM Bleeding Heart and Scare People Needlessly Entertainment Program on WMLW (which, I am happy to report, is still on Time Warner Cable) they led the broadcast with the six shootings overnight, one of which resulted in a fatality.

(Paragraph long side note - AKA another problem with the local news; The anchor then a reporter [doing that en vouge stand-up remote from the police headquarters downtown, despite none of the shootings happening downtown, and despite not interviewing anybody that was in proximity of the headquarters] described where the shootings took place, and showed some canned interviews with residents from the shot-up neighborhoods.  Then, as if to highlight the point, the anchor begins to explain that a similar number of shootings happened in Chicago overnight, despite Chicago's population of 3 million as compared to the 600,000 population in Milwaukee.  Pretty powerful stuff.  Except the talking head lacked one vital piece of information... There have been over 200 murders to date in Chicago, around 45 in Milwaukee.  Let's see, Chicago has five times the population, and five times the murders.  What, exactly, was gained by the anchor mentioning this?  Right!  Its right there in the middle of the name of the show "Scare People Needlessly".  Good job figuring that out. You're catching on.)

So the program goes on and on, then the weather ten minutes in (Side note; I park cars for the State Fair for five years, and don't ever remember a non-rainy day that was under 90 with a 75 dew point.  This will be an unbelieveably great stretch of weather for this year's Fair) and on the back end of commercials, they mention the African World Festival, (and "You still have time to get down there").  After all that... THEN they first mention the State Fair, and they highlight how huge the crowd was.  I consider a large crowd at State Fair (and Summerfest, too) to be around 100,000.  Talk about burying the lede!  OK, I'll give the six overnight shootings the top spot.  But reporting on an event that draws 100K is stuck AFTER the African World Festival spot? C'mon...

You know how generous I'm feeling?  I'll even give them that. since the African World Festival is a one day event versus the 11 days of State Fair.

But I have one uber-serious question...

How much money does Summerfest line into the news director's pockets each summer to get the opening story on every newscast (6:00 AM, 7:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 10:42 AM, etc, etc) on every station for 11 days?
