Laura's Corner

I work very hard and am attending college to obtain my degree in the Human Service field. Writing makes me feel alive and gives me the opportunity to touch those whom I would not be able to otherwise. Last but not least, I have been blessed with two amazing daughters who love me completely and support my dreams. Feel free to contact me with questions, concerns or feedback.

EUGENE KANE

First and foremost, I want to make it very clear, I am not a fan of Eugene Kane.  He appears to me to be a very angry person, continually expressing his viewpoint against certain individuals.  Although some of us have written about race in the past, it seems like his negative posts are allowed, even encouraged at times.

With that said, I "accidentally" came across an article titled "White gangs don't scare up e-mails, calls" which was written by you-know-who.  (http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=802328)  Part of the article states:  "I braced myself for the usual torrent of commentary from those people who send messages whenever stories like the “chicken grease trial” of black drug dealers or the assorted crackdowns on violent street gangs by Milwaukee police or any random act of violence by black people hit the headlines.  But after hearing about the culmination of a 20-month investigation by Milwaukee police, state and federal agents that resulted in numerous charges against 16 people affiliated with the so-called (name deleted) gang, I wondered why my usual suspects were missing in action."

Customer Service?

Alright, I will admit, that sometimes, maybe once a week, I make the unhealthy decision to go through a fast food joint. Yep, I cannot control myself. It's just something that gets me through to the next week.

I know minimum wage isn't all that much. I am sure it's more than enough to cover your basic cell phone bill and/or car insurance, right? So, although most of these kids will work your basic 20 hour work week, there is something so irritating about the type of customer service provided today at most of these types of establishments.

GIFT-FREE CHRISTMAS

As a child, one of my favorite times during the year was Christmas.  Why, you might ask?  Well, let me tell you.  It had to be the gifts.  The night before Christmas, knowing the very next morning we would wake up to goodies underneath the tree.  What memories!  The Barbie Dream House, the Light Bright, among other dreams which came true.  Santa always did us proud.

Yet, with the economy the way it is, it appears to me that families are downsizing.  Shows on how parents are now having to say "no" instead of "yes" are popping up on a daily basis.  Overindulgance has been a part of society because of the all-mighty credit card.  I recall working retail years ago.  Parents would come through my line to charge at least $500 worth of gifts for Johnie and Suzie and state they hadn't even covered HALF of what their children were requesting from Santa.

SINGLE PARENTS BEWARE!

Alright folks.  You know it's time we get real.  I am sure most of us heard about the family tragedy of Jennifer Hudson.  We know that her mother and brother were shot and killed in their family home.  We also know that for days her 7 year old nephew was missing.  He was found in the back of an SUV on Chicago's West Side on Monday.  He, too, had been shot and killed as well.

In doing some research, I found the myspace page of Jennifer's sister, the mother of this 7 year old boy.  Her name is Julia Hudson, and the link to her page is:
