Laura's Corner

I work very hard and am attending college to obtain my degree in the Human Service field. Writing makes me feel alive and gives me the opportunity to touch those whom I would not be able to otherwise. Last but not least, I have been blessed with two amazing daughters who love me completely and support my dreams. Feel free to contact me with questions, concerns or feedback.

Better Business...

Once in a while, I cover a topic regarding businesses and such.  If you read my previous blog, you will understand that I have been through the ringer and back regarding income.  I am the Queen of finding the best deals.  I refuse to spend excessive amounts of money regarding labels knowing that next season I can get the same item for usually 1/4 of what someone else paid.

Since I have done my research and have a little bit of knowledge in most areas of life, I am able to lower the price on almost anything.  When striking the best deal, the #1 route would be to go to a private seller.  With cash in hand, a bit of humility and a personal touch will create a home run situation for both.

When dealing with car or home repairs, word of mouth is the way to go.  With lenders tightening their belts regarding Home Equity loans, cash is king.  I have been using the same contractor for 5 years and have been very satisfied with the professionalism and results as well.

My all time favorite mechanic’s shop is Fremut’s.  Located at 6500 W Beloit Rd in Milwaukee , it is a family owned business which has served my lineage for many years.  They are honest, will do exactly what is needed and advise if further work is needed.  Years ago, my vehicle had light metallic noise upon driving in reverse.  They informed me that a bolt had loosened and replaced it.  Total charge: $1.25.  Feel free to call them at 414-541-8880 to discuss your auto needs.

Regarding auto body repair, feel free to visit Auto Body Specialists at 6024 W Mitchell Street in West Allis .  My sister and I had our cars repaired at this facility and were 100% satisfied regarding the outcome.  They have been in business for many years and the owner is professional, honest and straightforward.  Click on the following link regarding the Better Business Bureau review: http://www.bbb.org/wisconsin/business-reviews/auto-body-repair-and-painting/auto-body-specialists-llc-in-west-allis-wi-11000074/.  Feel free to call them at 414-545-9211 for a quote or repair.

Appliances are best found through family members or good friends.  I was gifted a double-sided refrigerator 10 years ago and it is still running strong.  If you desire to purchase new, comparison shop.  Take your ads into your favorite store and they will usually meet or beat the price.  Inform them you are a “dedicated” shopper, and you can bargain another 10-20% off the sale price.  I recently found a great deal on a Kenmore gas stove.  Instead of paying $425.00 in store, the online price was $237.00.  I was able to phone a friend (not Regis) to assist with the delivery in exchange for a hug.  Not too shabby.

Hair is something I tackle every two months, give or take.  For color, I go to my local drugstore and peruse the isles.  Coupons plus the sale can give you an excellent box color for $4.00 to $10.00.  I have used each and every one and have never had an issue with any.  I recently went from blonde to reddish-brown and am very pleased with the new shade.  My hair cut is done at Vici Beauty Salon at 4111 S 108th St in West Allis .  My go-to stylist is Amy.  With her personality described as fun and edgy, I feel as if I am talking to a best friend and confidante while sitting in her chair.

Regarding the spa or massage therapy, find your best deals online.  First time clients may receive up to half off their initial visit.  You will attain the same results if you are honest with your masseuse regarding your physical needs along with the amount of pressure.  If your back has been causing you some trouble, inform them if it is upper or lower.  If your legs have been giving you a hassle, is it the foot, calf or thigh area?  Be specific, they are there to serve you.

Second hand or thrift stores have brand name clothing for as low as $2.49 per item.  It may take a little longer but you will never find the same item twice.  You can find unique items for special occasions as well.  Take a friend, not the same size as yourself, and cut your time in half.  Each can focus on the sizes of yourself and your partner in crime.  I have walked out with an entire season of outfits for as little as $30.00.  Regarding kids, we all know they destroy and grow out of clothes within a week.  When it comes to young children, shop without them.  Do not allow your children to feel guilty about a “not-new” item.  It’s new to you, and that’s what counts!

I invite you to add comments regarding your favorite services.  Feel free to contact me regarding names and numbers of my own favorites.  Small businesses deserve recognition and in this economy, who doesn’t want a deal?
