Miller tastes too good to hurry through

January 1st's Favorite Thing - Mass produced beer

I know, this one is a little strange.  For someone who eschews chain restaurants, packaged chili powder and spaghetti sauce, you'd think I would be a beer snob.  I did try for awhile, but other than an occasional microbrew when the mood strikes, I'll take a bottle of Miller High Life or Schlitz, thank you very much!

When the microbrew craze was incubating in the early-90s, I would occasionally go into Discount Liquors (where many microbrews were sold by the bottle, as opposed to the six-pack or by the case) and hand pick a few bottles.  A couple times at family gatherings, we'd have a tasting of the various beers.

I did notice something then, and though I accepted it at first, it eventually became annoying to my precious taste buds.  The flavors seemed to be stronger than I would prefer (not the alcohol content, but that malty-hoppy taste).

The other night, I was over by a friend's house and he had a Golden Ale from Hook and Ladder Brewing Company (my friend had a sampler 12-pack, and from the label descriptions, this seemed to be their lightest offering).  But to me, it was heavy, bitter and unpleasant.  I politely finished it, and went right back to the MGD 64

Most mass produced beer have common characteristics... they have good carbonation, relatively light color, and, well, as a beer snob once told me, "They taste like beer-flavored soda".

But I like my beer-flavored soda.  I drink Miller High Life most of the time, and when I do want something a little more flavorful, I will grab a bottle of Schlitz.

Never a Budweiser, though.  They didn't build me a stadium, and if High Life is beer soda, then Bud is Diet Rite Cola.

I also like Miller's beer commercials, too....
