Labor Day "Doggie Dip" at Cool Waters
Residents for Off-leash Milwaukee Parks (ROMP) and the Milwaukee County Park System are pleased to announce the season’s final “Doggie Dip” at Cool Waters Aquatic Park after the pool is closed to the public for the swimming season. A presale of admission passes will be offered during open hours at Cool Waters the day before the dip on Sunday, Sept. 5 from 10am-6pm.

Today is the 2010 United Way Campaign kick-off. Your workplace may conduct a campaign; you may read articles about United Way in JSOnline; or you may see campaign billboards throughout our community encouraging you to “Give. Advocate. Volunteer. LIVE UNITED”.
There’s a reason why: when people support the United Way of Greater Milwaukee, they’re actually supporting organizations that help our community. In fact, a large donation from the United Way made it possible for 2-1-1 @ IMPACT to respond to nearly 11,000 community households that sustained flood damage this past July.
Making Last Minute Labor Day Plans?
This Labor Day weekend promises to be a fruitful one for the tourism industry. AAA Wisconsin reports that in Wisconsin, more than 734,000 people are expected to travel. That’s a 10.8 percent increase over 2009. 19,000 of those travelers will be going by air, while an estimated 688,000 are expected to drive to their destinations.
If you haven’t planned a major car trip yet, there’s no need to feel left out. You don’t need four wheels for a Labor Day getaway, especially in Wisconsin. Here, it only takes two wheels. We’re considered one of the most bicycle-friendly states in the nation, with good reason: Wisconsin led the way on building modern bike trails by being one of the first states to convert railways to multiuse paths. According to the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, we now lead the nation with more than 1,000 miles of trails, including the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the Hank Aaron Trail, which cuts right through the 5th Senate District.

Last week I covered approximately .001% of my experience regarding alcoholism. The reason for me sharing is because I believe we are all affected in some sort of fashion. We are all connected throughout this life by a loved one’s choice to consume this type of beverage in an excessive manner.
Although I would love to solve the world’s problems, my job first and foremost is to help individuals take steps regarding their own personal health. Unless we take care of ourselves, there is no way in heck we can help anyone else.

I ran some errands today
On my way back from lunch I was heading west on I-94 from downtown. By the time I got home, I had compliled these words of advice for our friends at the Harley Davidson festivities this weekend.
- If I am behind you in the center lane on the freeway, and neither of us is going 45 MPH, then you are not just one lane too far left, but about one mile from where you should be. Get off the freeway and use Bluemound Road
- If I am in the left lane (getting around dufus number one) and you get so close to my rear bumper that I can count the mosquitoes in your teeth, you may be in the wrong country.
- You and your bretheren are the only ones who want to hear your potato-potato-potato. Today is one of the first car window open days in weeks, and gunning your motors under the overpass impresses nobody. All it does is make me wish that the roadway loses its integrity.

State Partners with Medical College to Draw More High-Tech Research to Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Building Commission released $10 million this month to help purchase and install a 7 Tesla MRI scanner at The Medical College of Wisconsin. The investment in this highly advanced medical imaging equipment will encourage high-tech medical research firms to focus on Wisconsin, as well as attract federal research grants to the 5th Senate District.
I have advocated for this major development since 2007, working with members of the Joint Finance Committee, leadership from both houses and the governor to secure this substantial financial commitment to advancing medical research in Wisconsin. The 7T MRI will provide greater resolution for diagnostic imaging, allowing researchers to study workings of the human brain at levels they have never seen before.
Chicago area grocer plans first Wisconsin store for West Milwaukee
The owner of Cermak Fresh Market, based in Aurora, Ill., plans to open a similar store in West Milwaukee that focuses on selling fresh fruits and vegetables.
Mike Bousis, who opened the Aurora store in 2007, said Thursday he plans to have the new store open within 18 months. It would be just south of Target, 1501 Miller Park Way.
